"What If He Can Change the Day" is the fourth episode of Day Break which aired on November 29, 2006.
[edit] Summary
While trying to find out who framed him, Hopper is starting to figure out what his partner, Andrea, did that caused her disagreement with Internal Affairs.
[edit] Synopsis
The episode begins in the middle of the night, with Hopper responding to Andrea's call relating how she may have killed someone. When Hopper arrives, he finds the body of Eddie Reyes, a former partner who was kicked off the force for drug use. Although the circumstances of the incident are not entirely clear, Hopper agrees to help Andrea dispose of the body. However, while driving the body to another location, Eddie (who is apparently not actually dead) suddenly regains consciousness. As a result, Andrea and Hopper turn the car around and drive him to the hospital. Upon arriving, Hopper quitely slips out to avoid unwanted police attention at the hospital.
When the day starts again, Hopper, still bleeding lightly from his previous wounds, quickly gets dressed and makes a call to Andrea, warning her to stay away from Eddie, on suspicion that he might again be using drugs. Hopper returns to Baxter's home, in an effort to speak with Ava Reese (the woman who mailed him the package). When he finds her in the pool and questions her, she informs him that there were actually two packages; the other was sent to his sister.
Hopper locates his sister and asks her about the package. Although she asserts no knowledge of such a package, Hopper insists that the two visit her home to attempt to locate it. Upon arriving at her home, they find it ransacked. Shortly thereafter, the men in the black car pull up outside, but Hopper, filled with rage, shoots them repeatedly, killing both. He finds his sister's husband tied up in the backseat, and after ungagging him, demands information. The husband reveals that he has no knowledge of a package, but that the men in the car were apparently tracking Hopper's truck by use of a transmitter covertly attached to the underside of the vehicle. After threatening the husband, Hopper's sister finally reveals that she actually had the package all along, but was scared and hid it outside. Hopper and his sister retrieve the package from its hiding place, and discover that it contains a picture of a dead woman with a series of numbers printed on the bottom of the photograph.
Realizing that the photograph is related to a crime scene, Hopper uses the case numbers on the bottom of the picture to try and find information about the case. He is ultimately unsuccessfully, though, learning that Internal Affairs has pulled the file (for an unknown reason). While trying to puzzle out how the various clues are related, a panicked Andrea calls, and gunfire is heard over the phone. Visiting the scene of the crime, Hopper finds that Andrea has killed Eddie, apparently due in part to the suspicion which Hopper raised as a result of his call that morning.
Hopper restarts the day, and this time visits Andrea at her home early in the morning, discovering that Eddie was actually spending the night with Andrea. Although the two have a brief verbal confrontation, Eddie eventually leaves to go to work. Hopper too departs, and again begins plying Internal Affairs to determine who has pulled the crime file. While doing so, the mysterious man from the quarry calls, offering Hopper a deal. Hopper is to meet the man or his associates at a local park that afternoon with the two packages, which he accepts.
Upon arriving at the park, Hopper receives a phone call from Andrea, who tells him that she urgently needs his help and begs him to come immediately. Although Hopper is conflicted, he agrees, and abandons his park meeting to meet with her. She tells him that he "set off" Eddie by visiting that morning, and now Eddie is either getting high or attempting to find additional drugs in order to so. The two search for Eddie, and eventually find him, but in the process, he takes Andrea hostage. Hopper manages to calmly talk him down, and eventually is able to end the encounter without either of the two dying. He stresses to Andrea that he has made a great personal sacrifice to help her (alluding to being forced to give up on the earlier park meeting).
The day restarts again, and as Hopper is going through his morning routine, his cellphone rings, catching Hopper off guard because this has never happened before. That is, the phone rang despite Hopper not actually having changed anything during the scope of the current day. It's Andrea, who calls and says that she suddenly feels much more hopeful and upbeat about things, as if something has changed. This seems to imply the titular question, "What if he can change the day?"
Andrea informs Hopper that she's called to tell Hopper she's taking Eddie to rehab, and wants his help to make sure he goes through with it. On the way to rehab, Eddie sees the picture of the dead woman (from the package) sitting on Hopper's backseat. Eddie recognizes her, and explains to Hopper that it was from a homicide case a number of years ago, back when he was a cop. In fact, the investigation into the case was being led by Hopper's father (who was also a detective), but was eventually stalled because a crucial piece of evidence disappeared.
After dropping Eddie off, Hopper is struck with a realization: the evidence is the first package. Heading back to his apartment, he retrieves and opens up the package. Removing the hourglass, he holds it up to the light, revealing a fingerprint clearly visible on the side.
