"What Goes Around..." is the third single from Justin Timberlake's sophomore solo album FutureSex/LoveSounds.

[edit] Song information

"What Goes Around..." has been described as a 2006 version of Cry Me a River, due to the similarity in theme of the two songs. Both songs are scathing attacks on an unfaithful lover. Despite the familiar topic, Timberlake has stated that "What Goes Around..." is not about Britney Spears, whose alleged infidelities were the inspiration for "Cry Me A River". Rather, he claims the song is based on the experience of his best friend Trace Ayala, who previously dated actress Elisha Cuthbert.[citation needed]

The song has received positive reviews so far. Billboard gave a positive review, opposed to the negative reviews they gave the first two singles from "FutureSex/LoveSounds", SexyBack and My Love. The Billboard reviewer Chuck Taylor said "To call this "Cry Me a River" part two is among the greatest compliments we can muster, given the disposable quality of the previous two releases." He also went onto predict that the song would continue Timberlake's string of hits, saying "sounds like three in a row for Timberlake. Well done." [1] In addition, the song got a 3 and 1/2 out of 5 star rating from Pitchfork. [2]
