What is the Abbotsford that is referred to in the caption of this photo? Is Abbotsford a city or town on the banks?

Currently, "Abbotsford" points to a disambiguaton page, hence the confusion.

One possibility -- is the reference to Abbotsford House?

It's the house, indeed. No, there's no town there. There used to be just a ford (named for the Abbott of the abbey in the nearby town of Melrose), and then Walter Scott built his house there. I'll fix the link in the image. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 02:26, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
