103.1 WEUP, often pronounced "103.1 "we up", is class C3 25,000 watt (25 kilowatt (kW)) urban contempoary radio station that broadcasts on the FM dial. 103.1 WEUP also simulcasts in addition to the 103.1 frequency, but also on 6,000-watt WEUZ FM 92.1 Minor Hill, Tennessee, 8-watt W222AK-FM 92.3 & 10-watt W275AA-FM 102.9 Huntsville, Alabama, 13-watt W238AD-FM 95.5 Trinity, Alabama.

WEUP-AM is a 5,000 watts (5 kW) urban gospel AM station broadcasting 1600 kHz, coupled with 10,000 watts coming from WEUV AM 1700, 2,500 watts from WHIY AM 1190. WEUP-AM is dubbed "Huntsville's Heritage Station" due to the fact that it was the first in the region to broadcast an urban format.

In 2006, there was a re-arrangement of call letters among the group's AM stations. 1700 became WEUP, 1190 became WEUV, and 1600 (the original WEUP) took the WHIY call letters. It has been rumored that the company plans to sell off the 1600 frequency or take it dark, and also that the directional array for 1600 would be dismantled.

[edit] History

WEUP began broadcasting on March 20, 1958, on an 100-watt 1600 kilohertz (kHz) AM station owned by Leroy and Viola Garrett. WEUP-AM broadcast from a pink trailer in the grounds of Syler Tabernacle Church in Huntsville. The station's format was a mixture of gospel, sermons, news, and R&B everyday from sunrise to 6 p.m.

Listeners of 1600 AM were able to hear a viable mix of gospel and soul music as well as news and public affairs catering to the interests of the Tennessee Valley's black population.

The Garretts made history when they public testified before a congressional committee in 1963 resulting in the change of a Federal Communication Commission (FCC) law regulating 24-hour broadcasts in the 1960s. That year WEUP began 24-hour broadcasts, yet a milestone for urban radio.

Viola Garrett decided to sell the station in 1987 after the passing of her husband, Leroy. So in that year, Hundley Batts, Sr. and Dr. Virginia Caples, took the ownership and operation of WEUP-AM. They also acquired another station, WEUZ 92.1, licensed to Minor Hill, Tennessee and brought WEUP onto the FM broadcast airwaves.

They operated WEUP-AM & WEUZ-FM under the parent company name of Broadcast One. They continued to expand the station's audience by acquiring WHIY 1190 AM, WEUP-FM 103.1, both licensed to Moulton in 1989. WEUV-AM 1700 was added to the group of stations that are part of WEUP, Huntsville's Heritage Station.
