Westmont High School is located in Campbell, California, United States and is part of the Campbell Union High School District. The school retains many academic achievements including the 1996 California Distinguished School and 1997 National Blue Ribbon School. The student body is approximately 1500 students. As of 2006, the school principal is Owen Hege.

Westmont High School's marching band has consistently done well in Northern California Band Association (NCBA) and Western Band Association (WBA) competitions. Past shows with a short list of notable awards are as follows:

Each year, Westmont High School's marching band also participates in the Los Gatos Christmas Parade. In 2005, Westmont took 1st place in the parade for the small band competition.

The band is currently taught by Mr. Dan Naylor.

[edit] Speech and Debate

The "Warriors of Word" at Westmont High School have a history of past success at various levels. Most recently, successes include a 10th Place Congress finisher at the National Tournament (in 2003) and a State Champion in Oratorical Interpretation (in 2004). Westmont also hosts the State Qualifier tournament each year for Speech and Debate.

The Speech and Debate coaches as of 2006 are: Mr. Paul Pinza, Ms. Alicia Roberts, and Ms. Kathy Wyss.

  • The Myriad: The school's yearly literary magazine. It is published once a year and filled with artwork, prose, and poetry submitted by the students at Westmont High School.
  • The Shield: Westmont's student-published newspaper; publishes 8-9 issues per year.

[edit] Sex crimes and controversy

In 1997, John A. McCabe, a 36-year-old former biology teacher at Westmont High School has been charged with several counts of child molestation involving three girls.

On September 25, 2000, Todd Lafferty, the Westmont High School girls softball coach was jailed after being accused of six unlawful sexual acts involving three minors over the course of four years. On September 11, 2001 he pled guilty to the charges and was sentenced to three years, eight months of which were in a state prison. (Coincidentally, Westmont High School (of Westmont, Illinois) math teacher and boy's basketball coach, was removed in September of 1999 for three unlawful sexual acts involving one minor.)Appelate Court Decision in Doe v. Dimovski, et. al.

On January 10, 2002, the school district removed the book Blossom River Drive (ISBN 0-9676723-0-9) from its approved book list due to a passage which detailed two preteens experimenting sexually. The book was written by Westmont English teacher Richard W. Ferri who later stated he would file a grievance against the district.
