[edit] Football

The Westlake Football Team has experienced much success since 1990. The Westlake Football Team has qualified for the playoffs in every season since 1988. The Current Head Coach and Athletic Director is Derek Long. He is assisted by a coaching staff led by Offensive Coordinator Sul Ross and Defensive Coordinator Lane Grigg. Through December 9th, 2006, Coach Long's record at Westlake stands at 37 Wins and 12 Losses including a 7-3 mark in the playoffs.

[edit] Rivalries

Westlake's main rival are the Austin Maroons, Westwood Warriors, and the Bowie Bulldogs. Westlake also maintains a rivalry of much smaller magnitude with the Crockett Cougars. Between the above four opponents, Westlake has lost just four times.

[edit] Volleyball

The Westlake Volleyball team has experienced tremendous success since current coach Al Bennett took over the program in the 1980's. Coach Bennett has led the team to the playoffs in each of his 19 seasons, 14 District Championships (1989, 1991-95, 1997, 1999-2004, and 2006), 6 Regional Championships (1991, 1993, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005), and 4 State Championships (1991, 1993, 2002, and 2004). The 2004 team was perhaps the greatest team Westlake ever fielded, with a roster loaded with 8 Division I recruits and 14 Seniors, the 2004 Lady Chaps finished 43-1 and were ranked #1 Nationally at one point in the season.

[edit] Noteworthy Stat

The last time that the Westlake Football Team did not qualify for the playoffs was the 1987 season, before any of the 2006 team's players were born. The 2006 playoff berth marked Westlake's 19th consecutive appearance in the UIL Playoffs.

The last time that the Westlake Volleyball Team did not participate in the playoffs was in the 1986 season, also before any of the current players on the 2006 team were born. Westlake Volleyball has appeared in the playoffs for 20 straight years.

Over the years, it has been progressively easier to qualify for the playoffs. Before the 1990 season, only the top two teams from each district advanced to the playoffs. Since 1990, the top three teams from each district advanced (this was for 5A only until 1994 when 4A adopted the three team playoff rule as well). From 1990-1993, Westlake was a 4A program, so it was not until Westlake's 5A return in 1994 did Westlake benefit from the new rule. In 2006, 5A added a fourth playoff team from each district.
