Westhill High School (Connecticut)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Westhill High School is a high school located in Stamford, Connecticut, United States.

The school opened in 1972, to accommodate the growing baby boom population which had filled Rippowam High School and Stamford High School to capacity. Westhill is located on Roxbury Road, in the northern section of Stamford. Its mascot is the Viking and its colors are purple and gold. Its sports teams are the laughingstock of Fairfield County, with a few exceptions.

Westhill is known for its diverse student population, which comes at a price. Several times over the past few years, threats of gang violence between Albanian students and African-American students have shut down the school, as most of the student population stayed home for their own safety. Principal Camille Figluizzi-Bingham has been ineffective in improving the school, and it is widely accepted that she will be replaced at the conclusion of the 2006-2007 school year by a more qualified leader appointed by Superintendent of Schools Joshua Stark.

The school newspaper, The Westword, has won several national and state awards over its three decade existence.
