Western Maryland Rail Trail
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Western Maryland Rail Trail (WMRT) is a 23 mile long shared-use asphalt-paved rail trail from Fort Frederick to Little Orleans, Maryland suitable for walkers, joggers, bikers, rollerbladers and, weather permitting, cross country skiing.
The trail runs on the abadoned right-of-way of the Western Maryland Railroad. Trains stopped running in 1987. In August of 1990 the Maryland Department of Public Resources purchased the right-of-way from 1/2 mile west of Fort Frederick State Park to Little Orleans through Hancock from CSX Transportation. The first ten-mile section from Fort Frederick to Hancock opened in 1998. The second section from Hancock to Pollypon, a small body of water where canal boats would winter, opened on June 10, 2002. The third section extending from Pollypon to Pearre opened in 2003. An additional 4.5 mile extension to Little Orleans, with access through the 4,400 foot Indigo Tunnel, has been funded.
