Western Lombard is a Lombard language variety spoken in Italy and Switzerland (Canton Ticino).

In Italian-speaking contexts, Western Lombard is often generically called a "dialect". This is often incorrectly understood as to mean a dialect of Italian, which actually is not the case. Western Lombard and Italian are different languages and are not mutually intelligible. The Western Lombard, more than many other languages spoken in Italy, have many varieties, because of the mountain geography and the politic history of divisions.

Like all other dialects of Lombard, Western Lombard belongs to the Romance language family related to French, Romansh, Italian, etc.

As per today, Western Lombard does not have any official status either in Lombardy or anywhere else: the only official language in Lombardy is Italian.

Various dictionaries, a few grammars, extensive literature and a recent translation of the Gospels are available.
