West Whittier-Los Nietos is a census-designated place (CDP) in Los Angeles County, California, near the San Gabriel River and the San Gabriel River Freeway (605 Fwy.). The population was 25,129 at the 2000 census. The census area consists of separate unincorporated communities of Los Nietos and West Whittier.

West Whittier-Los Nietos is located at 33°58′34″N, 118°4′8″W (33.976113, -118.069000)GR1, or about three miles northwest of Whittier. [1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.5 km² (2.5 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 25,129 people, 6,720 households, and 5,597 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,865.5/km² (9,997.3/mi²). There were 6,857 housing units at an average density of 1,054.8/km² (2,728.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 53.06% White, 0.57% African American, 1.25% Native American, 1.63% Asian, 0.20% Pacific Islander, 38.49% from other races, and 4.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 83.07% of the population.

There were 6,720 households out of which 43.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.7% were married couples living together, 16.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 16.7% were non-families. 13.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.73 and the average family size was 4.04.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 30.9% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,921, and the median income for a family was $47,699. Males had a median income of $33,012 versus $26,057 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $14,417. About 6.3% of families and 8.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 6.8% of those age 65 or over.
