West Virginia News LLC
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
West Virginia News LLC is a limited liability company which is a partnership between the owners of WHCP, a television station in the Huntington-Charleston, West Virginia television market and a group of investors made up of Charleston political figures and trial lawyers. The investors are all associated with the West Virginia Democratic political party, particularly the faction led by United States Senator Jay Rockefeller, although he personally is not involved.
In the partnership WHCP donates the broadcast time and the other owners produce the news programming and are responsible for its content. The news is produced from a studio in Charleston, 75 miles away from the station, located in Portsmouth, Ohio
The broadcast focus of the news is almost totally on the city of Charleston and West Virginia state politics, to the exclusion of coverage of the other 60 counties the market. Since the WCHS/WVAH duopoly and WOWK likewise focus on West Virginia, this leaves only WSAZ, the market ratings leader and one of the highest rated news stations in the country, to cover the entire market.
The operation is thought to have been founded as a counter voice to WOWK, owned by West Virginia Media Holdings and the Metro News Radio Network, owned by West Virginia Radio Corporation, which are both owned by investors associated with the Republican party.
