West San Jose, San Jose, California
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
West San Jose is the westernmost neighborhood in San Jose, California. The Lynbrook High School area of West San Jose is bound to the north by Bollinger Road, to the east by Lawrence Expressway, to the south by Prospect Road, and to the west by De Anza Boulevard. The eastern parts of West San Jose, however, are less defined, and can thought to be the part of West San Jose between Lawrence Expressway and California State Highway 17.
West San Jose, in housing and demographics, is very similar to the Monta Vista neighborhood of Cupertino. The neighborhood is about two-thirds Asian and one-third white. Most of the housing was built in the 1950s as moderately priced housing. A few decades later, however, the neighborhood has gone upscale as the median housing value shot up to nearly one million dollars. This sudden boom in the cost of living is due partially to the heating up of the real estate market in the entire San Francisco Bay Area and that demand for West San Jose's housing has risen significantly because of many people wishing to enroll their children in better schools and the close access to major arterieis such as Lawrence Expressway, US 280 and CA 85.
The Lynbrook High School area of West San Jose is well-known for its excellent schools. Lynbrook High School and Miller Middle School have performed exceptionally well and score over 90% on the CAT/6 tests. West San Jose's reputation of good schools in the Cupertino Union School District and the Fremont Union High School District have helped bring on soaring housing values and competitive school environments.
East of Lawrence Expressway, outside of Lynbrook's school boundaries, the schools perform about as well as most other schools in middle-classed Californian cities, and thus home prices there are a bit lower than the Lynbrook High School area. Because many Asian American families move to the more affluent parts of West San Jose to enroll their children in its prestigious schools, the Lynbrook High School district has a much higher proportion of Asian Americans than the Prospect High School district east of Lawrence Expressway.[citation needed] The area also boast beautiful city parks such as Saratog Creek Park which located by Doyle Road and Cordelia Avenue. Until the end of World War II, West San Jose was primarily orchard land that was considered part of Cupertino. Since the post-war housing boom, almost no orchard land has remained in West San Jose.
Private schools in West San Jose include Archbishop Mitty High School, a Catholic school.
