West Point Grey Academy is a co-ed independent school located in Vancouver, BC, Canada. It was founded in 1996 and Clive Austin, former Deputy Headmaster of St. George's School was asked to become the first Headmaster of West Point Grey Academy. Stephen Anthony is currently the head of senior school.
The school has a large campus and features both a Junior and Senior school. The Junior school has grades Pre-Kindergarten - 7, and the school continues at the Senior School from grade 8 - 12. West Point Grey Academy has a total of about 800 students.
This school benefits from having competitive sports teams and is the BC elementary schools track and field champion. In addition to this, they are an academic powerhouse, ranking at the top of the annual Fraser Institute Review. Furthermore, they have what is arguably one of the strongest high-school debating teams in Canada.
Recently, WPGA has been added to a group of schools in the Lower Mainland commonly referred to as the "6 pack." These schools are West Point Grey, York House School, Crofton House School, Little Flower Academy, St. George's School and Vancouver College.
[edit] History
In 1996 West Point Grey Academy began its course with just over 300 students and 24 teachers. Programmes were offered from pre-school to Grade 8 in a co-educational, non-denominational environment. The new school was embraced by the community and its rapid progress was evident early on. Families were drawn to have one school which families with children of both genders could attend.
In its seventh year WPGA completed an academic advancement plan. The new mission statement captured the essence of the Renaissance and became the school's compass for a "Journey of the Imagination".
Having just completed its tenth year, WPGA has enjoyed unprecedented growth. With over 850 students and 90 faculty members it offers a broad range of programs and classes which extend to Grade 12. Six graduating classes have continued to post secondary institutions around the globe.
The school closed because of weather for the first time in 10 years on November 30, 2006.
