West Africa Rice Development Association

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The West Africa Rice Development Association (WARDA, now known as the Africa Rice Center) is an autonomous intergovernmental research association that seeks to alleviate poverty and enhance food security in Africa by increasing the productivity and profitability of rice crops.

WARDA is one of the 15 specialized research centers – the "Future Harvest Centers" – of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). Its normal headquarters are in Bouaké, Côte d'Ivoire, but because of the political situation in that country, it is currently operating from the premises of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture's station in Cotonou, Benin.

Its proudest achievement to date is the development of the New Rice for Africa (NERICA) cultivars.
