Werner Erhard and Associates (also known as WE&A or as WEA) functioned (from February 1981 until 1991) as a successor-organization to Erhard Seminars Training (est), and became a predecessor-organization to Landmark Education Corporation.

Initially WE&A marketed and presented the est training (in the form of its various seminars and workshops), but in 1984 it introduced a modified, shortened and less intensive introduction to Werner Erhard's ideas, called "The Forum".

In early 1991, as hints of scandal and various allegation focussed increasing public attention on Werner Erhard and his organizations, Erhard sold up and left the United States, and in January 1991 WE&A morphed into new forms and structures.

The timeline and the table below outline the various name-changes and incorporations along the way to WE&A becoming Landmark Education. Previously, the organization used the names:

  • Breakthrough Technologies
  • Transnational Education Corp
  • The Centers Network
  • Rancord Company, Ltd.

The plethora of names may reflect in part the methodology of "margolis schemes" [2] , named after Werner Erhard and Associates's attorney Harry Margolis. Compare the concept of a Yeoman loop.

[edit] Taxation issues

The United States IRS settled a tax dispute with Erhard by paying him $200,000 for wrongful disclosure of false information. In a separate issue, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit found Erhard arccountable for civil tax evasion February 8, 1995 in the case "Werner H. Erhard v. Commissioner Internal Revenue Service" [3]
