During the 1970s and 1980s, WYST, better known as "92 Star", was a very popular Top-40 station. It was broadcast on both 92.3 FM and 1010 AM (the latter station is now WOLB).

In 1991, WYST changed its format, call letters and brandname. The station, now called WERQ, 92Q, took on the Rhythmic Contemporary Hit Radio format. Eventually, it would be classified as a Mainstream Urban station.
