[edit] Werdnabot doesn't like me

I added the werdnabot text to my user talk page and set it to go off after three days. It's been longer than that and werdnabot doesn't seem to be archiving me. Did I mess something up? I haven't received any error messages. --Yamla 04:56, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

I wanted to add my voice to this. I've been using this for sometime, and about 3 days ago it seemed to have stopped functioning. I've checked to ensure the code is fine and it seems to be, but I've been using it for at least a month or two perfectly fine.--Crossmr 01:57, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Ditto ... my talk page is also no longer being archived. It's really starting to pile up. --Cyde Weys 05:00, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

a quick check of werdnabots contribs indicates a couple of talk pages are being archived, but I've no idea why those few are and the rest aren't.--Crossmr 05:06, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
I'll do some investigating now. Werdna talk criticism 06:19, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
Yep, you guys were right. There was a bug in the regular expression Werdnabot uses for detecting sections. You'll find that Werdnabot is running a large run now. Werdna talk criticism 06:28, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

It seems to be copying content to the designated archive page but not removing it from the soruce page. Is that normal? --Yamla 14:45, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Got some diffs? This is not normal. Werdna talk criticism 23:36, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
See My talk page history and my talk archive page history. Note that the content is added to the archive successfully but is not removed from my talk page. That is, Werdnabot doesn't actually edit my talk page. --Yamla 23:52, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Ditto, it "archived" 51 sections on my talk page archive without actually removing them from my talk page. --Cyde Weys 01:44, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Okay, I'll take a look. In future, place these reports in my bugtracker (which, admittedly, I set up about 5 minutes ago.) Werdna talk criticism 03:36, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

This looks like a slight issue with repeated requests. I'll have it try all edits three times, and rollback its previous edit if removing doesn't work. Thanks for letting me know. Werdna talk criticism 03:40, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Just as another report, there are sections that are older than five days (seven days to be precise) that have not been archived on my talk page yet the Werdnabot coding is set up correctly (as it was working fine up to August 13). --TMF T - C 00:37, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Checked this out. There is only one section that hasn't been posted to in five days, and this has a non-standard timestamp. I marked this for archival, with <!--werdnabot-archive-->. — Werdna talk criticism 00:44, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Hey Andrew, apart from the deletion bug, I've also spotted another minor one where Werdnabot is inserting an extra linebreak between sections that it's copied over into the archives. Cheers, Netsnipe (Talk) 16:35, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Well it worked okay once when you fixed it, second time through though it archived the text but didn't delete it. So its half there :) thanks for all the hard work!--Crossmr 18:18, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bot request

This is an insanely trivial thing, but I was wondering on the possibility of overriding the X day limit, i.e. allowing <!-- NOARCHIVE --> keep a section indefinitely, and <!-- ARCHIVE --> remove a section (such as a trivial RFA "thank you") archive it on the bot's next check. Again, no need for this, but it would be nice. Ral315 (talk) 16:43, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

The <!--Werdnabot-noarchive--> has been implemented since Werdnabot's creation. I will add your other suggestion to my bugtracker and get around to it in due course. Thanks, Werdna talk criticism 23:35, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
Well, that's what I get for not reading documentation :) Thanks for looking into the other one. Ral315 (talk) 01:35, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
There's documentation? ;-) Werdna talk criticism 03:34, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
<!--werdnabot-archive--> Implemented. — Werdna talk criticism 04:36, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] IRC departure

My connection died a minute ago...and I won't be able to get back into IRC until my ghost dies. I can't come back in with another username because it is a pain to switch them with my IRC program. I will be back there soon. - LA @ 06:46, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] What am I doing wrong?

True confession: I don't think there's a problem with a "bug" on Werdnabot. My money is on user error. Could I ask you talk a look at my talk page when you have the chance? A thousand thanks ... BYT 13:27, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A RfA thank you from en:User:Xyrael

WikiThanks

I'd like to thank you Werdna for either supporting, opposing, commenting, nominating, reading, editing, promoting and/or anything else that you may have done for my successful request for adminship (I've broken the one thousand sysop barrier!); I'm thanking you for getting involved, and for this I am very grateful. I hope to be able to serve Wikipedia more effectively with my new tools and that we can continue to build our free encyclopedia, for knowledge is power, but only wisdom is liberty. Please do feel free to get in touch if you feel you can improve me in any way; I will be glad to listen to all comments. Again, thanks 8) —Xyrael / 12:09, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion of my comments

Please don't delete my comments (or revert your prior deletion) from the debate page. As I said, if you feel that I have acted inappropriately, please post a notice or respond to the notice I posted about your actions on AN/I (or take whatever course of action, save deletion of my comments, you see fit). I ask you sincerely, as the deletion was, imho, utterly unwarranted and broke the 'comprehendability' of the discussion on a page expressly established for debate. Sincere thanks. -- User:RyanFreisling @ 12:49, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

My refactoring of the discussion was simply to improve readability, and not to become involved in the discussion. I do not see the Administrator's Noticeboard as a place to go with all of your problems — our dispute resolution process works just fine for me. The first step is something you should be in particular aware of. You should speak directly to the user, on their talk page, via email, or on IRC. I am contactable here, by email and on IRC under the nick Werdna. At this stage, it is important to assume good faith. If you can't resolve the dispute via this channel, you should seek informal mediation from the mediation cabal, or formal mediation from the mediation committee. I would likely have backed down by now, as I was simply trying to do what everybody seemed to think should be done — a refactoring of the discussion. Posting to the Administrator's Noticeboard in the hopes that I would be blocked or publically shamed for refactoring a discussion is counterproductive and ineffective. After mediation, you may consider taking the case to arbitration, although in this situation, arbitration, and probably even mediation, would be overkill. Please keep our dispute resolution process in mind for any future disputes you may find yourself involved in — it is there for a reason. — Werdna talk criticism 22:48, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your advice about process for resolution. Since this was a single thread of discussion, I felt that your selective refactoring really wasn't appropriate (as others corroborated on AN/I)... so needless to say we disagree on the wisdom of your decision to remove my comments. I am grateful, however, that you chose not to revert your deletion. I would similarly suggest that you refrain from editing others' comments without endeavoring yourself to resolve conflicts, just as you advised. Thanks again for the conflict resolution steps. -- User:RyanFreisling @ 22:57, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Don't worry about it. It's a new Perl version I've been experimenting with. I call it Werdnabot II: Archive This! — I haven't run a complete job on it because of other bugs. [edit] Your RfA

Hi Werdna. I am posting here since this is the standard page for posting comments.

My goal in writing this message is to help you make it thru next time you try. Here are my suggestions:

  • Be as civil as you can in your everyday edits and interactions. Remember that everyone has feelings and try your very best to be WP:CIVIL and WP:AGF. For example, reduce the sarcasm to a bare minimum (never is best), try not to revert Talk pages except in cases of clear vandalism - if you think some comment was not to the point or irrelevant, just let it slide - WP will survive even if not all comments are absolutely relevant
  • Use the words 'ridiculous' etc. to describe someone else's thoughts or comments as little as possible (never is best) - just try to tone down your criticism of others, even if you are absolutely convinced you are right (and you may well be)
  • Be judicious also in edit summaries - try to be low key and respectful - again, AGF and CIVIL
  • Try to make amends with FloNight - if you apologize and show her your new ways she will support you
  • Do not retry RfA again too soon. Give it a few months, where you prove to us and to yourself that you can handle stressful situations with coolness and civility per above
  • When you do try RfA again (and you should), do the following:
  • State upfront the RfA history with its main criticisms and how you have addressed them
  • Give example of situations which were stressful to you, yet you kept cool and collected, with minimum or no sarcasm in messages and edit summaries
  • When/if you see an Oppose vote, try your very very best to ignore it, unless you see a clear cut case of mis-information, and even then think long and hard about it - each time you protest an Oppose, there are some that view it negatively. I know this is tough, but it will be better to sit back and let your recent edits in stressful situations speak for themselves. Try not to argue with the Oppose voters, hard as it is, and you'll come out ahead.

That's it. I hope you understand that I, and virtually every other editor in the Oppose camp, want you to succeed personally and help all of us together make WP a success. I think if you really try you'll make it.

Thanks and good luck, Crum375 02:23, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm glad to see an oppose voter who isn't what you might describe as a drive-by voter. I appreciate the advice, even if much of it is common sense that I've forgotten over the edits. I don't know what to apologise to FloNight about, but I'm just about to (was going to anyway) post on her talk page offering to make amends. — Werdna talk criticism 05:56, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Greetings from the antipodes. As one of your support !voters, I hope you'll review my some of my comments -- which wound up scattered throughout the page as I input them throughout the day -- and take them to heart. You still have a strong future as a Wikipedian, and I am glad you have decided to recommit yourself to the technical projects that are among your greatest strengths. (For example, I may ask Werdnabot to archive my talk page before too much longer.) If you have any questions about any of my comments on your RfA or here, please let me know. Regards, Newyorkbrad 00:37, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Werdnabot on AN

I noticed you disbled AN archiving by Werdnabot. Do you know why it was stalling? Does Werndabot need the archive target not to be a redlink, because the last time I incremented the target number I did not make a first edit to the target file. I created the target tonight but you disabled the code before it ran.

Also, previously Wb could not distinguish level 2 sections from level 3, and would archive the level 2 section if it was old enough, leaving more recent comments in a level 3 subsection behind (and causing the subsection to attach to a previous irrelevant section). Is this fixed? Thatcher131 02:11, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Yes the second bug is fixed, no it doesn't care if it's a redlink or not. I'm going to dig for the issue — it's stalling after three sections and I don't know why. Thanks, — Werdna talk criticism 02:26, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bot 2RD question

Hi. I've been using Werdnabot's 2RD fixer. So far, I've only been using it for pages that appear quite a bit on Special:DoubleRedirects, per the instructions (which say "large number" of 2RDs)... I was wondering if that means I shouldn't just write a regex to work on the Special page, output it in the right format and copy-paste 100 or so at a time. This would cut down labor a huge amount, assuming that you don't have to work to feed the info to the bot. So I guess I'm just asking: do you have to do any work for it to read the request page and/or act on it? is there some other reason I should not do that?

I'd appreciate a reply on my talk page, but if I don't get one, I'll search through your archives. Thanks, --Storkk 21:03, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Go ahead. It doesn't matter how many double-redirects — runs on a regex completely autonomous anyway. — Werdna talk criticism 03:35, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

[edit] AMA IRC

Hi Werdna - if you can (I noticed you as alternate contact), could you change the access settings for the channel #AMA.Wikipedia, so we can have a couple of regular AMA IRC'ers opped? At the moment, I'm thinking primarily of Royalguard11 (IRC User) and myself (Martinp23 on IRC), as we seem to be on the channel most often. Of course, we can then pass on op priveliges to the more senior people (like thadman) when the channel gets more popular (when - not if). Please let me know of you can do this :) Thanks a lot Martinp23 20:51, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Doesn't matter now - sorry to have bothered you. We've moved to #AMA-Wikipedia, due to conflicts with various link scripts in the old channel. Thanks Martinp23 21:50, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
I don't know why I'm on any access list for a channel that I've never been on. — Werdna talk criticism 10:04, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks Werdna

Hey Andrew, thankyou so much for your awesome support during my recent RfA. I am thrilled (and relieved) that it passed with a final tally of 160/4/1. I was completely blown away by the incredibly generous support I received from so many fantastic Australian editors like yourself. And your early commented-out vote made me feel very encouraged, so thank you for that as well.:) Please don't hesitate to give me a yell if there's ever anything I can give you a hand with. Cheers mate, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 13:26, 19 September 2006 (UTC) P.S. I found your user page fascinating--Garrett is one my family names, and I have a second cousin called Andrew Garrett!
