[edit] History

First chartered in 1766, this town was originally reserved for the private use of Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth. When John Wentworth succeeded his uncle as governor, one of his first acts was to grant the tract to a group of settlers, naming it Wentworth in his uncle's honor. Most of the new colonists came from Salisbury, Massachusetts. The town has a picturesque common, presided over by a Federal style church and bordered by antique homes.
