[edit] history log

[edit] 2004 - creation of the company

the company was officially created in September 2004 and launched its service at the beginning of 2005, based on what is now know as the "Wengophone, classic edition"

[edit] 2005 - visiophony

In September 2005, Wengo opened its visiophony service at the same time as skype on a cross platform (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X)

[edit] 2006 - interoperability with other Instant Messaging networks

Leveraging on its Open Source voip client called Wengophone, Wengo could integrate the gaim project into its software, giving its users the opportunity to communicate via Instant Messaging with other users on the MSN, Yahoo, ot Google Talk networks.

[edit] 2006 - when calls should be free

Many voip operators like Wengo and Skype started offering free PSTN calls in 2006 which accelerated the commoditization of telephony calls.

In June 2006, Wengo offered a two month unlimited calling plan to several new star destinations including Belgium, Guadeloupe, India, Martinique, Poland, Vietnam. The deal was posted on many websites including Fatwallet and many people subscribed to the unlimited plan. Wengo later suspended many accounts detailing how customers were abusing the system by overcalling certain destinations.

The Indian community and Wengo could not totally agree and clarify on the criteria used to consider that an "unlimited" calling plan is overused. Such plans usually refer to a "reasonable usage" that is hard to define. At some stage it became substantially difficult to call India - possibly due to the popularity of the offer - which left many people who'd signed up for the promotion very angry and disappointed.

[edit] 2006 - Wdeal as a social marketplace

In June-September 2006, Wengo launched Wdeal, a social marketplace that gives its users the opportunity to create toll-free telephone number and paying services so that they can sell their expertise over the phone.
