[edit] Route description
Wendover Avenue is divided into a "West" segment and an "East" segment.
[edit] West Wendover Avenue
Wendover Avenue's western terminus is at NC 68 in High Point. From this terminus, Wendover travels northeast out of High Point past "The Paladium", an extensive local shopping center. Continuing northeast as a 4-lane boulevard, Wendover passes a predominantly residential area. After passing an interchange with Guilford College Road and crossing into Greensboro city limits, Wendover enters the city's busiest shopping district. At an intersection with Bridford Parkway, Wendover widens to an 6-8 lane boulevard. Traffic jams are common along this stretch of road past Bridford. After passing numerous shopping centers, a Wal-mart, and the Landmark Center commercial development, Wendover comes to one of its busiest intersections, which is with Stanley Road.
Continuing through the traffic signal at this intersection, Wendover crosses a bridge across Interstate 40; exit ramps are found on both sides of this bridge. Wendover Avenue is one of I-40's busiest exits in North Carolina. After the I-40 interchange, Wendover passes through a series of traffic signals which lead to area shopping centers and the Celebration Station amusement park.
Shortly after veering to the left at a fork with Clifton Road, Wendover becomes a 4-lane divided freeway with a speed limit of 45 mph. After passing exits for Spring Garden Road, Holden Road, Market Street, the road comes to an interchange with Friendly Avenue, where Friendly Center is located. Continuing past exits for Benjamin Parkway and Westover Terrace, the freeway comes to an interchange with Batteground Avenue and US 220. US 220 then joins Wendover Avenue in a easterly direction through northern Greensboro.
The freeway downgrades back to a boulevard with many at-grade interchanges. US 220 and Wendover Avenue continue east (signed SOUTH) to a parclo interchange with US 29 and US 70 in northeast Greensboro. US 220 leaves Wendover here, heading south with US 29 SOUTH and US 70 WEST.
[edit] East Wendover Avenue
US 70 takes US 220's place, following Wendover Avenue east toward McLeansville. About 2.5 miles further, Burlington Road merges into US 70 and Wendover Avenue. At this point, East Wendover Avenue ends while US 70 continues east with Burlington Road. Shortly after this intersection, US 70 has an interchange with the Future Interstate 840 before going on to McLeansville and Burlington.
