[edit] About

The school's website claims a "proud tradition dating back to 1867". Sir George Grey gave the school a deed of endowment in 1853 but no teaching occurred. Instruction began in 1867 as Wellington Grammar School on Woodward Street. In 1874 it opened at its present location.

The school has an enrolment scheme. Previously, it had a selective entry scheme.

It also had boarding students until the school's boarding hostel was demolished in 1981.

Each year its rubgy team plays in a competition with Nelson College, Christ's College, and Wanganui Collegiate School known as the "Quadrangular".
