Wellington is a railway station serving the town of Wellington, Shropshire, England. It is situated on the Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton Line. Trains are operated by Central Trains (who manage the station) and Arriva Trains Wales. The station currently has three platforms: two through platforms and one bay platform.

[edit] History

The station was built at the junction of the Shrewsbury and Birmingham Railway with the Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company's line from Stafford. It was opened on 1 June 1849.

The town of Wellington was designated as part of the new town of Telford in the 1960s. As Telford did not have its own railway station at first, Wellington station was renamed "Wellington-Telford West" to indicate that it now served the new town. After Telford Central station opened in 1986, Wellington eventually reverted to its original name, although this did not happen for a number of years.

[edit] Services

Wellington is currently served by two trains an hour between Birmingham New Street and Shrewsbury, one operated by Central Trains and the other by Arriva Trains Wales. The latter trains continue alternately to Aberystwyth and Chester. There is also Central Trains hourly service between Wellington and Walsall, which calls at all stations.

Wellington has been suggested as a stop on the Wrexham, Shropshire and Marylebone Railway's proposed service between Wrexham General and London Marylebone.
