Welcome Break

Welcome Break is a company which operates twenty-six motorway service stations in the UK. The company was originally owned by Hanson subsidiary Imperial however was sold to Trusthouse Forte in 1986. Trusthouse forte merged the company with its own motorway service area company Fortes and adopted the Welcome Break name across the entire estate. After the takover of Forté Hotels Group in 1995 by Granada, Granada was ordered to sell 27 of the Welcome Break sites by the monopolies and mergers commison. The company has subsequnetly had a number of owners. Typically, Welcome Break service areas have cafes (which differ between location) that include KFC, Burger King, Food Connection, Coffee Primo and Red Hen. Recently Starbucks opened at Welcome Break's Charnock Richard services on the M6 motorway, and it is possible that Coffee Primo could be replaced by Starbucks in the future. At Welcome Break service areas, petrol stations are either Shell or BP. Hotels at Welcome Break are mostly Days Inn; there are a small number of hotels branded as Welcome Lodge.
