Welch Military Academy is a defunct Military Academy that was located in Columbia, Missouri. The current site of the Academy is now the University of Missouri-Columbia chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. (SAE).
According to local history, the Academy became defunct in the 1910s or 1920s. It is believed that the Academy played football in the 1900s. One game that is documented in the Missouri State Historical Society Newspaper Archives was played between Columbia High School (now Hickman High School) and the Academy in 1901. The final score documented is 24-0 in favor of Columbia High School.
According to the 1922 Savitar (University of Missouri-Columbia Yearbook), the Welch Military Acedemy building, located at 100 Stewart Rd. in Columbia, was leased, remodled, and furnished by the Women's Student Government Association (W.S.G.A.) in the 1920-21 Academic year. It was able to be occupied by the holiday season that year. It was designed to be a co-operative house, the girls living there had direct control of the house under the supervision of the W.S.G.A.
The original building burned down while in possesion of the SAE fraternity in the 1950s, but was rebuilt almost exactly and was reoccupied in 1957, and continues to be occupied by the fraternity. The site became recognized by the Boone County Historical Society Notable Historic Property in 2004.
