Goku and Chi-Chi at the conclusion of possibly the roughest and happiest day of their lives

Following the colossal battle against Ma Junior, rather than go straight into the wedding, fate has one more plan for Son Goku before he begins his wedded life with Chi-Chi.

Goku and Chi-Chi head to Ox King's palace. Wedding preparations begin literally the second the happy couple gets there. During all this preparing, an earthquake begins; before everyone knows it, gargantuan flames engulf Fire Mountain once again. With Ox King trapped keeping Chi-Chi's wedding dress from harm, Goku and Chi-Chi have to set out on a quest to find the Basho Fan. However, since it was stained and thrown away by Roshi many years ago, they find themselves in a predicament and ponder on what to do.

Seeking help from Baba to find the fan, the couple heads to her palace where she directs them to a place containing a map of how to create a new Basho Fan (however they believe the fan is actually there). Goku brings Baba along to what is essentially a Spring Resort, headed by what appears to be Oolong's relatives. After a brief escapade where Chi-Chi's peeped-on by Oolong's family, Goku discovers the map to create the fan within the spring. With a tip from Baba, Goku and Chi-Chi head for Master Roshi's, where Umigame is happy to provide them a guide map/book to create a new fan.

Making their way to the volcano of the fabled "Fire Eater Bird", Goku once again runs into Emperor Pilaf, Mai, and Shū, who've returned for one last 2-episode stint. To the dismay of Goku and Chi-Chi, when they actually discover the last of the bird's kind being born, its feathers dissolve upon human contact. Taking the egg shells with them, they get a tip from an old scientist about the original Bansho Fan being lodged in a snowy mountain and head off; however unknown to them, Roshi is scolding Umigame for giving Goku a map that was created for the sole purpose of "impressing a few pichi-pichi gals".

Once there, Goku and Chi-Chi meet an odd old woman who forges octagon shaped honey combs. After one more adventure Goku and Pilaf have together on the snowy mountain, everyone discovers that the original Bansho Fan thrown away by Roshi is actually in possession of the octagon woman. With Pilaf threatening to cut it to shreds, Goku quickly recovers it, dispatching Pilaf and his cronies one more time to the snowy mountain, Pilaf is never to be seen again till his return in the first GT episode.

Returning to Fire Mountain with the Bansho Fan, Goku tries his hardest to put out the fire, merely putting it out for no more than a split second. Learning from Baba that this fire is actually a leak within the Spirit Realm, Goku and Chi-Chi take one more adventure to the mystic gateway between the Living world and the Next. After making their way through, they have to encounter numerous illusions of warriors and dragons. Not buying the illusions, Goku Kamehame-Has himself and Chi-Chi through the mouth of a dragon, successfully bringing the two to the cave of the Spirit Furnace.

Making their way inside, Goku and Chi-Chi come upon Goku's Grandfather, Gohan, whom Goku mistakes for being Tajoro; the guardian of the Spirit Furnace. After formally introducing Chi-Chi to Gohan, a gigantic woman comes into sight, shrinking herself to a normal size and introducing herself as Anine. After learning from Goku that he wishes to turn the Spirit Furnace off to free the Ox King, Anine starts a battle between the two after Goku attempts to turn the lever. However once Anine sees that Goku is holding the Bansho Fan, she halts the battle and agrees to allow Goku to travel inside the furnace to patch the leak.

Thanks to the previous travels of attaining "Fire Eater" egg shells and octagon honey, Goku is fully prepared to travel into the Furnace. Anine showers him in a handful of water (she's giant sized at this point in order to lift the Furnace pot) and Goku makes his way with the help of the Bansho Fan. Ending up at the very bottom of what the Monkey King, Son Wukong, found himself in; Goku patches the leak and makes a B-line out of the Furnace. With the help of his recently patented Bukujutsu and Power Pole, he escapes the Furnace, at this point the flames at Fire Mountain have lowered just in time. Goku bids a final farewell to his Grandfather, wishing him many happy years with Anine, and he and Chi-Chi travel back to the castle.

With Ox King's miraculous survival and the wedding dress unscathed, the wedding goes on as planned; Ox King, Baba, and hundreds of villagers witness the beautiful ceremony. Chi-Chi thanks everyone for attending as Ox proclaims how proud he is of his only daughter. The young bride grips her white tux husband's arm, much to Goku's happiness. With one last moment in the day, Baba responds to the Narrator by seeing into Goku and Chi-Chi's future. Not saying anything to the viewer, she only lets out a small shocked sound, grins, and winks at us as we move on into Dragon Ball Z.

In a closing note, it should be noted that none of the events of this particular story arc occurred in the manga, as it was in its entirety a filler mini-saga implemented at the hands of Toei, as with Garlic Jr. and the Afterlife Tournament, among others.
