Weapon (Final Fantasy)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about the creatures known as "Weapons" in the Final Fantasy video game series. For items that characters equip in the series, see List of Final Fantasy weapons.

The Weapon (ウェポン Wepon?) creatures are entities (some biomechanical and others entirely organic) in the Final Fantasy series. They have been a main feature in the series since the fifth installment. They are generally very powerful and have large amounts of HP, relative to other monsters in the game, and are usually presented as powerful optional superbosses.

[edit] Final Fantasy V

Omega in Final Fantasy V

Omega appears as an optional boss close to the end of Final Fantasy V. According to a book found in the library section of the Rift, it is a monster that even the twelve heroes with the sealed weapons could not defeat; players are advised to avoid him (unfortunately, the library section is after the player passes by where Omega is patrolling). Omega has several relatively strong "technological" attacks such as Atomic Ray, Rocket Punch and Wave Cannon, and either absorbs, dodges, or is simply immune to any sort of attack thrown at it. Omega is weak against lightning, but is protected by a permanent Reflect spell. Altogether, Omega is almost invincible.

Defeating Omega earns the player a large amount of ABP, and a medal to commemorate the victory. Although the name "Weapon" is not yet affixed to his title, he bears many similarities to later Weapons, and was to reappear as Omega Weapon in Final Fantasy VIII. Omega is also an optional boss in the first Final Fantasy of Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls. He has 35,000 Hit Points (which is quite a lot for FFI), which is tied with his FFV counterpart, Shinryu, for the most in FFI. The player finds Omega in the Lifespring Grotto dungeon (which is a secret dungeon in the GBA version only). There, victory over Omega yields the Muramasa, the Ninja's strongest weapon.

In the Game Boy Advance remake, there is a secret dungeon that is exclusive to this version. One of the challenges in this dungeon is an area crawling with Omegas, ultimately leading up to a boss battle against an even more powerful model, dubbed Omega Mk. II. MK. II has 65,000 HP, level, 99, tied also with Neo Shinryu, the stronger version of shinryu, and drops the force shield upon defeat, which is the strongest shield in the game.

[edit] Final Fantasy VI

Atma Weapon in FFVI.

The Weapon in Final Fantasy VI was Ultima Weapon (translated as "Atma Weapon" in the North American localization). Ultima Weapon has 24,000 hit points and is a required boss battle on the Floating Continent, and describes itself as being "made of pure energy and as old as the cosmos itself". This is actually a subtle hint, which players can use to defeat him much easier. Rather than defeating his physical form (HP), the player can defeat him by defeating his energy form (MP). By using the spells RASP and OSMOSE, the player can reduce his MP from 999 to 0, which kills him. A much stronger version can be fought as an optional battle in Kefka's Tower. Here, it is called "Ultima Buster" (renamed Atma in the North American localization), and it has 55,000 hit points.

There are also two swords in the game (which bear a resemblance to the Lightsabers of Star Wars) that carry the same name. These weapons inflict damage based upon the current HP of their wielder; the higher their HP, the more damage the swords will be capable of rendering. The size of these weapons also increases and decreases in accordance with its wielder's current HP (and thus its level of power).

Ultima Weapon also appears as an optional boss in the Final Fantasy II remake for the Game Boy Advance, during the Soul of Rebirth story. With 15000 HP and a myriad of devastating attacks, it is extraordinarily difficult to beat him, but it is advised that one try anyway, since he yields the Ultima Tome in defeat.

[edit] Final Fantasy VII

In the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, there are seven Weapons (also spelled WEAPON): Jade Weapon, Sapphire Weapon, Ultima (or "Ultimate") Weapon, Diamond Weapon, Emerald Weapon, Ruby Weapon, and Omega Weapon. Unlike many games in the series, the Weapons play a major role in the Final Fantasy VII storyline. According to the game, these entities were created by the Planet as self-defense mechanisms to deal with the threat of Jenova, with the exception of Omega, whose purpose is evacuation. However, once Jenova was contained by the Cetra, the Weapons were no longer needed and entered hibernation beneath the ice at the Northern Crater. Jade Weapon is the first to be activated, as a result of the events of Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis. Five years later, when Meteor is summoned by Sephiroth, the other fighting Weapons are activated to fulfill the reason of their existence: protecting the Planet by "reducing everything to nothingness"[1]. The final Weapon, Omega, is awakened three years after the destruction of Meteor to serve its purpose as an "ark" for the Planet's Lifestream.

Only three Weapon creatures featured in the original Japanese release of Final Fantasy VII; these were the Sapphire, Diamond, and Ultima Weapons. The Western release (and the later International release) added the Ruby and Emerald Weapons as optional battles, as well as a mandatory battle against the Diamond Weapon.

[edit] Jade Weapon

Jade Weapon appears in the Weapon Mode of Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII. Jade Weapon is the first Weapon to be awakened since the first Jenova incident. It appears in response to the summoning of Zirconiade to destroy the planet. In Weapon Mode, the Turks are charged with not only stopping Zirconiade and Fuhito but Jade Weapon as well. Jade Weapon looks like a hybrid of a blue-green manta ray and a beetle with a sharp and metallic form. It has long pink and grey horns and six arm-like apendages, three on the underside of each fin. Much like Ultimate and Omega Weapons, Jade Weapon is flight-capable. It is unclear whether Jade Weapon is intended to be a part of the larger canon, as it appears only in a special mode independent of the game's storyline.

[edit] Sapphire Weapon

Little is known about Sapphire Weapon beyond its destruction at the hands of Shin-Ra at Junon. Much like the Emerald Weapon, Sapphire Weapon is aquatic. Before being destroyed, the Weapon launches an attack on Junon which allows Tifa to escape from an attempted execution. The Weapon is destroyed when its head is blown off after a direct hit at point-blank range from the Junon Cannon, a massive artillery cannon mounted over the town that fires mako-enhanced shells. The name Sapphire is not actually mentioned in the game, but it was confirmed by its database entry in the fourth disk of Final Fantasy VII International and then more recently in an official collectible figurine release (seen to the right).

[edit] Ultimate Weapon

Ultimate Weapon in FFVII.

Ultimate Weapon is an aerial Weapon with a body configuration reminiscent of a centaur and a head reminiscent of a dragon. The party's first encounter with Ultimate Weapon is in Mideel, when it attacks shortly after Cloud is discovered there. Following the demise of Diamond Weapon, Ultimate Weapon hovers over a lake near Junon and can be fought by ramming into it with the Highwind. After this, the Weapon flies around the world and must be continually battled -- again, by ramming it first -- to slowly deplete its HP. Eventually, Ultimate Weapon hovers over Cosmo Canyon after flying over Junon and Fort Condor, where it can finally be defeated. Cloud receives his eponymous Ultima Weapon from the battle and the shallow crater formed by Ultimate Weapon's plunge allows the player to gain entrance to the Ancient Forest without the aid of a special chocobo.

When Ultima Weapon is defeated, the player is able to fight Ruby Weapon, which has partially emerged from the desert floor in Gold Saucer area.

[edit] Diamond Weapon

Diamond Weapon in FFVII.

Diamond Weapon (Diamo Weapon in Japanese versions) is a land-based Weapon that emerges from the ocean and begins to travel towards the city of Midgar. The party intercepts the Weapon and engages it in combat. Despite being "defeated", the Weapon simply walks away, apparently unfazed, sensing "murder". A short time later, Shin-Ra fires the Sister Ray, the mako-powered energy beam cannon recently relocated to Midgar from Junon, at the energy barrier Sephiroth erected around the Northern Crater - while the Diamond Weapon stands directly between. Sensing the incoming blast, the Diamond Weapon fires a barrage of energy bolts at the beam's origin, though obviously too late. The Weapon's energy bolts strike the Shin-Ra building, incinerating the upper levels and injuring Rufus Shinra. Meanwhile, the Sister Ray's beam destroys the Weapon and neutralizes Sephiroth's barrier.

[edit] Diamond in Combat

Diamond's total sum of hit points is equal to 25,000. The Diamond weapon's basic attack is a stomp, doing minimal damage. It has another basic attack, of which it launches a blue "blast" from its mouth. The Diamond Weapon is also invincible (or takes 0 damage) from any kind of physical hit such as "Attack," "Deathblow," etc. Although it is invincible to these types of moves, once it activates its ultimate finisher, the Diamond Flash, any damage is tolerated. Said Diamond Flash is activated via "Countdown." When Diamond reaches critical hit points, it starts is Countdown, which counts from 5 to 0, countdown speeds varying according to a player's "ATB" speed set up in the Configuration menu. The finishing move is a golden ray emitting from its crimson core, with additional golden bullets launched from the shoulders (Golden bullets also seen in the Full-Motion Video following its defeat). Diamond Flash will ensure a player's characters to reach critical hit points, as well as inflicting the "Silence" status (given that "Ribbon" is not equipped). Upon defeat of the Diamond Weapon, the player receives a well-deserved amount of EXP and 3,500 AP. It is also noted that you may use the command "Steal" or "Mug" to successfully obtain a "Rising Sun" shuriken for the character Yuffie Kisaragi.

[edit] Ruby Weapon

Ruby Weapon in FFVII.

Ruby Weapon is a fire-based Weapon added to the North American and International versions of Final Fantasy VII. It can be found in the Corel desert near Gold Saucer after Ultimate Weapon's defeat. To initiate battle, the player must run into the Ruby Weapon's innocent looking head, slightly above the sand, with either the Highwind a Golden Chocobo, or the buggy. Among its many abilities are the magic spells Ultima, Comet2 and a variety of status effects inflicted by its tentacles. It also possesses a technique, Whirlsand, that will completely remove one character per casting from the entire battle until only one remains. This, however, can be avoided by KO'ing two party members before the battle begins and not reviving them until Ruby's fingers are buried. Ruby Weapon is highly resistant to physical damage, as well as most magic abilities. It drops the Desert Rose, an item that can be traded to the treasure collector in Kalm for a Golden Chocobo. Occasionally, casting the summon spell Hades will allow the status effect Paralyzed to occur, lasting for a number of turns. Combining Hades with the Quadra Magic Materia will most likely freeze the weapon for most of the battle, giving players plenty of time to destroy Ruby. This method actually makes Ruby easier than perceived and allows for an easier attempt to beat the Weapon. Ruby Weapon has roughly 800,000 hitpoints. Summoning the Knights of Round is the best way to inflict damage, but it provokes Ruby Weapon to counter with Ultima. If you want to use the ultimate summon, though, use master summon to have two characters summoning this summon.

[edit] Ruby in Combat

Ruby Weapon's main attack is that of its tentacle, which deals 4000 damage and 400 MP damage. Another tentacle attack deals small and frog. Some of Ruby's attacks are Ruby Ray, which deals 3000 damage and Confuse, and Comet2, which deals 4 attacks at 7-8k damage each. Ruby will occasionally cast Ultima, which deals 7000 to all characters. Ruby is immune to most magic and has strong physical defense, so good use of Barrier and MBarrier should be used here. All characters should be equipped with ribbons, which can be acquired by morphing Master Tonberrys. The rewards from defeating this Weapon are a small amount of EXP, but a massive amount of AP, along with the Desert Rose.

[edit] Emerald Weapon

Emerald Weapon in FFVII.

Emerald Weapon is an aquatic Weapon added to the North American and International versions of Final Fantasy VII. It meanders about the waters between the two main continents and can be fought after the player gains access to a Shin-Ra submarine. A special materia called Underwater is necessary to remove a 20-minute timer that represents inability to breathe underwater. The Emerald Weapon has several "eyes" on each shoulder that act independently of the Weapon. Adding to the challenge of defeating this boss is its special attack, "Aire Tam Storm", ("Aire Tam" is actually "Materia" spelled backwards) which deals damage to the entire party based on number of materia equipped (1,111 points of damage for each piece of Materia equipped). Emerald Weapon has more hit points than Ruby Weapon, around about 1,200,000. However, Emerald may be easier to defeat than Ruby, depending on tactics. Ruby boasts extreme defense, while Emerald does not, so the latter can be defeated with physical attacks and limit breaks alone. However, using the 'KO-trick' against Ruby makes that battle easier than Emerald. Using Gravity 3 paired with quad magic is useful, as gravity will take 9999 damage each attack.

Upon its defeat, Emerald Weapon drops the Earth Harp, which can be traded in Kalm for several pieces of "Master" materia.

[edit] Emerald in Combat

Emerald Weapon's basic attack is a 3000 damage stomp-type attack. His other attacks include 'revenge stamp', which is the same, except to all, and Aire Tam Storm, explained above. His four eyes, two yellow and two blue, deal 300 MP Damage and 3000 HP Damage, respectively. Two effective strategies before the fight are mastering Gravity Materia and pairing them with Quadra Magic (At least 2 stars) to get 40000 damage for each Demi. Another strategy is to use Cloud's Omnislash when the eyes turn on, which usually kills two or three. Rewards for defeating this weapon are a small amount of EXP, larger than Ruby's, a large amount of AP, smaller than Ruby Weapon's, and the Earth Harp.

[edit] Omega Weapon

Omega Weapon is the final and most powerful Weapon to be activated and appears in Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. It has a humanoid torso with four feather-blade wings and three segmented tentacles from the waist down. The wings glow and further extend and become longer than Omega itself when it is departing to the void of space. While the other Weapon creatures were made to protect the Planet, Omega was made to absorb the Lifestream and unite all life on the Planet into itself, before departing for another world to transplant the Lifestream.

Omega Weapon in Dirge of Cerberus

However, it can only be activated when the Planet detects its end is near. In Dirge of Cerberus, the Deepground SOLDIERs intended to activate Omega, using the research provided by Grimoire Valentine. However, Vincent Valentine held the key item to that plan, the ProtoMateria that grants control of Chaos, Omega's "squire to the lofty heavens". It is Chaos' duty to act as the harvester of life when the end comes, by destroying all of the planet's lifeforms, thus returning all spirit energy to the Lifestream so that it may be absorbed into Omega. Omega and Chaos have been described as brothers who are the anti-thesis of one another, a concept that is somewhat similar to Cloud and Sephiroth.

In the course of Dirge of Cerberus, the Tsviet Weiss became one with Omega as Vincent is to Chaos. However, due to Nero integrating with Weiss prior to it, Omega was tainted by the G-Subtance. As Vincent travels inside Omega he is able to defeat Weiss, causing Omega to begin leaving the Planet with the lives it managed to take. However, Vincent, using the power of Chaos, is able to neutralize Omega in a kamikaze attack, returning both spiritual beings to the Planet until they are truly required.

[edit] Final Fantasy VIII

In Final Fantasy VIII there are two Weapon: Ultima Weapon and Omega Weapon. Because of the game's leveling up system, Ultima Weapon is more powerful if the party members are at higher levels. However, Omega Weapon is always level 100, regardless of what level the player is.[citation needed] Ultima Weapon, looking similar to its FFVII counterpart, can be found at the Deep Sea Research Center and has up to 100,000 hit points. Also, Ultima Weapon wields what seems to resemble Cloud's "Ultima Weapon" from Final Fantasy VII. Omega Weapon can be found at Ultimecia's Castle and has more than 1,000,000 hit points at level 100. Ultima Weapon also carries the Guardian Force Eden, the most powerful summon in the game and one of few attacks that breaks the damage limit of 9999 along with Cactuar's 10,000 Needles (must be level 100), Quistis' ultimate limit break, Shockwave Pulsar and the Kamikaze ability. Omega Weapon is this game's strongest enemy, far stronger than Ultimecia. His spell, Terra Break does more than 10,000 damage to all characters in the party, usually ending the game. This is typically remedied by using Hero or Holy War to make one or more characters temporarily invulnerable to the attack, or using the 'Defend' command. Some players consider the use of invulnerability items as defying the challenge of the battle. Defeating Omega Weapon unlocks a "Proof of Omega" page in the tutorial in addition to the Three Stars item won after the battle. It serves no other purpose other than perhaps a feeling of pride.

[edit] Final Fantasy X

Final Fantasy X also features both Ultima Weapon and Omega Weapon. Both are located at the Omega Ruins – a secret location in the world of Spira. Omega was a priest of Yevon who violated the teachings, and was banished to the Omega Ruins, where his restless spirit was consumed by his hatred and became a powerful fiend. Ultima Weapon is a smaller "clone" created by Omega and must be defeated before facing Omega himself.

Omega has 99,999 hit points in the U.S. and original Japanese versions of the game, making him possible to defeat in one hit provided that one of the player's characters has the "Break Damage Limit" auto-ability on his or her weapon. In the International and European versions, however, Omega has 999,999 HP, thus making him more difficult to kill. A third enemy, Nemesis, uses the same model as the two Weapons, but does not technically have the surname "Weapon." That said, its nickname, "Golden Omega," does have "Omega" in it, and -- based on Shinra's Dossiers in Final Fantasy X-2 and their classification as "Weapon" being a class of Fiend -- it can be safely assumed that Nemesis would be classified as a Weapon type Fiend. Nemesis is the most powerful boss in the game (aside from Penance in the International version) and can only be fought after capturing 10 of every monster required for the Arena as well as defeating every creation in the Arena. Nemesis has 10 million hit points, the highest HP of any monster in the game (save Penance, with 12 million). Upon its defeat, the player acquires the "Mark of Conquest," which serves no purpose other than indicating that the player has defeated Nemesis. Omega and Nemesis are the only enemies in the game from whom Kimahri can learn the Overdrive Nova. Both Omega and Ultima return in Final Fantasy X-2. Though Ultima is a bit stronger than Omega, he is still dwarfed by Omega's sheer size.

In FFX-2, Omega's title as the "most powerful weapon" was suceeeded by Paragon, the Fiend form of Zaon, which is found as the second-to-final boss of the Via Infinito.

The description for Ultima Weapon: "This terror teaches all who approach the true meaning of "Ultima." Whatever you do, don't call it Atma," is a joke on the mistranslation of Ultima Weapon in Final Fantasy VI.

[edit] Final Fantasy XI Online

Ultima in Final Fantasy XI

In this online installment of Final Fantasy, both Omega and Ultima appear as bosses during a long mission from the Chains of Promathia expansion pack. During this mission, you must fight five mammets, then Omega, followed by Ultima, all on an airship within a 45 minute time limit. The versions of Omega and Ultima more closely resemble the original Final Fantasy V "mech" type Weapon. All players taking part in this mission are temporarily lowered to level 60 for the entire duration of the battle.

Omega in Final Fantasy XI

Later when the players have access to the Limbus battles, they can again fight Ultima and Omega in separate battles, now in their "Proto" forms. These forms deal more damage and are much harder to destroy. Each battle has a 30 minute time limit and does not impose a level cap. Players who defeat these creatures are rewarded with special equipment not found by other means.

[edit] Final Fantasy XII

The latest installment of the Final Fantasy series also included its own Weapon, dubbed "Omega Mark XII". It is found at Giruvegan's Great Crystal, the same location as the Esper Ultima, with its door being to the right of Ultima's. It is only second to the Ultimate Mark Yiazmat, which has over 50 million HP, Level 73 and uses the skill Growing Threat to double its level to 146. It is Level 99, with 10,370,699 hit points, and its defeat results in 255 License Points. It drops the Omega Badge as proof of defeat.

If a player were to visit Omega MK XII before beating the Hell Wyrm and Yiazmat, one would find Omega in his dormant state. In this form he is "asleep", and resembles a giant treasure chest, similar to the Mimics in Barheim Passage, suggesting it is a Mimic itself.

[edit] Final Fantasy Unlimited

In the anime series Final Fantasy: Unlimited, Omega was an entity whose very movement can wipe out a world. Its body was scattered to the four winds in the form of crystals. However, these crystals "awaken" and take on monsterous forms to search for its 'siblings' and absorb them to reform Omega. Lisa and the Hayakawa twins encounter the pieces of Omega that form its Nail (around the time they meet Lou Lupus), Hair (when Chobi became Ciel), and Fin (which destroyed the Ghost Train).

Ai would eventually encounter the most important piece of Omega, its Heart. Named "Clear," he possessed a human-form and is covered with Flying Water, the only known material to curb Omega's unstable power. The Earl learned of this as he sent his forces to gather Omega's pieces to recreate the entity under his control.

In the end, all pieces but Clear were destroyed as the result of the Ocean Puzzle's destruction. But though the Earl's revised plan to absorb Omega's power failed, Clear was merged with his Flying Water, transformed into a stable crystal that Cid later used to power Syliva's Flying Water Recycling System.
