The Ghost of Ann Richards
  • September 13, 2006 - Picking up yet another early lead, former Governor of Texas Ann Richards has succumbed to esophageal cancer at the age of 73 after a rather brief battle with the disease. This is the 10th strike of the year in the pool. Two teams: RMHED and Canadian Paul score 7 points with her demise. This places Canadian Paul in a tie with Slave to the Grave for the 1st place. Although the scoreboard currently places Slave to the Grave in 2nd and Canadian Paul in 1st place, this is only being done by sorting the two alphabetically. In the event of a tie at the end of the pool, the player with the lowest APA will be victorious. Meanwhile, RMHED slides in to a tie for 5th place with 13 points, after having no score at all just two weeks ago - a fast catch-up indeed. For information on the death of Richards, see here.

  • August 27, 2006 - Picking up an early lead before any news sources, Maria Esther de Capovilla, the world's oldest verified person, has died today at the age of 116 years and 347 days, just over two weeks shy of her 117th birthday. This marks the first strike for two teams: RMHED and Icelandic Hurricane. Both said teams will receive 6 points, the lowest possible score in the WDP based on her age. See here for death verification.
  • July 11, 2006 - Snooker player John Spencer gives us our second hit in just two days after his long battle with stomach cancer. Three players had selected Spencer, all of which already have had at least one hit this year: Football Fan, Obiskobilob, Slave to the Grave. Spencer also marks the third strike for Slave to the Grave, and Football Fan, the first two players to achieve that many strikes this year. All 3 players receive 8 points, based on his age. This reworks the scoreboard once again: Slave to the Grave is now in first place with a strong 23 points, Football Fan is in a close second with 22 points, and Obiskobilob has now stolen 4th place with 15 points. For more information on Spencer's death, see here.
  • July 10, 2006 - After nearly a whole month of inactivity in the WDP, Football Fan's unique pick Rudi Carrell has decided to cark it at age 71. Carrell died last Friday, July 7, after a lung cancer battle that began in 2005. Football Fan chalks up seven points and slithers into third place with a total of 14 points, having already received 7 points from the death of popular pick Charles Haughey. The race is now getting tight because the current top five scores are now all consecutive numbers: starting with 5th place's 12 and First place's 16. For more information on Carrell's death, see here.

  • June 7, 2006 - Two deaths in two consecutive days, all thanks to the passing of bladder cancer-ridden WWF wrestler John Tenta, at the age of just 42. Canadian Paul, and Gretnagod both had selected the ill wrestler, and they have receieved a whopping 9 points each due to his young age. Since Tenta is the first score this year for the two players, they are now tied for 2nd place, robbing Slave to the Grave of that distinction just a day after she earned it. Meanwhile, the lucky player Cap'n Ohtz still clings to 1st place, while JD settles for 4th. Read more about Tenta's demise here.

  • June 6, 2006 - Kidney failure has claimed the life of Slave to the Grave's unique pick Billy Preston today, at the young age of 59. Preston had been in a coma since November of 2005. SttG swings into second place, nabbing 8 points, and surpassing JD's 6 points earned from the death of economist John Kenneth Galbraith's death a bit over a month prior. This is the WDP's 3rd hit of the game. Read more about Preston's demise here.
  • May 15, 2006 - World famous poet Stanley Kunitz has become our second hit today after dying on May 14 at the age of 100. Congratulations to Cap'n Ohtz, who scores another six points with this his second hit, bringing his total to 12 and securing the first place spot for now. Ohtz seems to be on quite the lucky streak indeed, having made points on every death so far this game. You can read more about this story here.
  • April 29, 2006 - Economist John Kenneth Galbraith has died today, at the tender age of 97 from what was called natural causes, giving us our first hit of the year. Congratulations to Cap'n Ohtz and JD who each score six points, making a tie for 1st place. Read more about this story here.
