[edit] History

This station signed on December 20, 1953 from the Congress Square Hotel in downtown Portland, from which the station took its call letters. It was owned by the Rines family, who had built the hotel in 1896 and started WCSH-AM 970 (now WZAN) on the top floor of the hotel in 1925. In 1977, it moved across the street to One Congress Square, where it is today.

WCSH was the flagship station in the Maine Broadcasting System, which included WLBZ-AM-TV in Bangor. In 1998, the Maine Broadcasting System was acquired by Gannett, which invested money into the station for cosmetic and equipment renovations.

[edit] Programming

WCSH has led the Portland news ratings since the late 1980s, often attracting more viewers than WGME-TV and WMTW-TV combined. Most of the station's key news personalities have been there for over ten years. Its newscast, which uses the popular News Center title, is the highest-rated local newscast in Maine. While sister station WLBZ in Bangor also uses the News Center title, the station simulcasts most of WCSH's newscasts. However, WLBZ does airs weekday newscasts at 5 and 6 PM that originate from their own studio in Bangor.

The station produces a newscast called News Center at 10 on The CW Portland on WPXT, the local CW affiliate. The newscast, which is shown daily, is hosted by WCSH anchor Shannon Moss and WLBZ meteorologist Steve McKay, and is broadcasted live from Portland, except for the weather, which originates from Bangor. The look of that newscast is similar to the regular News Center programs on WCSH and WLBZ, with the exception being that transitions are flashier on WPXT.

An outdoors and human-interest program, Bill Green's Maine, airs on Saturday nights at 7 PM. In 2003, WCSH launched 207, a local magazine show, which airs weekdays at 7 PM. The name "207" comes from the state of Maine's area code.

In October 2005, WCSH began airing NBC Weather Plus on its DT2 digital subchannel. The weather service includes local forecasts from WCSH and WLBZ meteorologists as well as national updates. News Center Weather Plus is simlucasted in Bangor on WLBZ's DT2 digital subchannel.
