[edit] Fifth District
While McMorris was hailed as a rising star and a heavy favorite for re-election, the increasing visibility Goldmark's campaign prompted CQPolitics.com, in late August, to change its rating on the race to Republican Favored from Safe Republican. As they explain, "the rating change means that McMorris is still likely to win re-election, but that Goldmark has demonstrated he will provide her with serious competition." [1] McMorris won with 56.1% of the vote.
[edit] Eighth District
This district is at the eastern edge of the Seattle metropolitan area. Incumbent Dave Reichert (R) won it 52% to 46% in 2004 but John Kerry (D) carried the district by 51% to 48% over George W Bush (R). Former Microsoft lead program manager Darcy Burner (D) is challenging the incumbent in 2006. Libertarian candidate and former Kent City Councilman, Bruce White qualified for the ballot, but elected not to file. The race was widely expected to be a close one, and the final difference was 4,727 votes (by last tally).
