Washington (elm cultivar)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The American Elm U. americana cultivar Washington is a tree of unknown origin. Introduced by the U. S. National Parks Service, it is unusual among elms in having triploid chromosome levels, suggesting it may be a hybrid between the tetraploid American Elm and a diploid species. The tree is resistant to Dutch elm disease, but less so than Valley Forge or New Harmony.
Neither Washington nor its triploid sibling Jefferson have been widely tested beyond Washington D.C., and are not known to have been introduced to Europe or Australasia.
