Warschauer Straße is the eastern terminus of the Berlin U-Bahn line U1. Opened in 1902 as one of the first stations on the network, it is an above-ground station. It is the only station of the U1 located in the eastern part of the city and was closed in 1961 following the construction of the Berlin Wall (The adjacent Stralauer Tor station was also located in the borough of Friedrichshain, but it was destroyed in 1945 and not rebuilt). It was reopened in 1996 following extensive reconstruction.
The Berlin S-Bahn station of the same name is around 150 metres away and together both are known collectively as "S+U Warschauer Straße". The S-Bahn station has been undergoing reconstruction since 2004. Plans call for the existing U-Bahn station to be closed and the line to be extended over a bridge to reach the S-Bahn station, to create a cruciform transfer station. However, due to the precarious financial situation in Berlin it is uncertain whether this part of the development will take place. A further 400-m extension of the U1 to intersect with the U5 at Frankurter Tor has been planned since the U5 was being contructed in the 1920s, but is unlikely to be built in the near future.
It is located on the street with the same name in Friedrichshain, on the northeastern bank of the river Spree. The East Side Gallery can be reached on foot.
