Warren Miller (director)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Warren Miller was born in Hollywood, California in 1924. He is a legendary movie maker of ski films. As a young man he took up the hobbies of skiing, surfing, and photography. After service in World War II he bought his first movie camera and started to teach skiing at various American ski resorts, beginning at Sun Valley in 1946, where he car-camped in the parking lot. He combined his interests by making sports films which to date number more than 750. His first film was shown in a basement in Portland.

In 1949, Miller founded Warren Miller Entertainment. Now owned by Time, Inc., the company produces a new film every year, which is then taken on tour near the end of autumn. The screenings are elaborate events designed as celebrations of the beginning of each skiing season.

In recent years, Miller has distanced himself from his company's films. Because of this, the makers of the two latest films, Higher Ground (2005) and Off the Grid (2006), opted to use Miller's narration from previous films rather than recording new narration.[1]

One of Miller's best-known quotes is "Don't take life seriously, because you can't come out of it alive."
