Waratah clinic
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Waratah Clinic is a community mental health clinic covering the municipalities of Moonee Valley and Melbourne in the Australian state of Victoria. The clinic, which was created by the merger of Ellery Clinic in Carlton and the Mount Alexander Centre in Essendon in late 2004, is the outpatient arm of the Inner West Area Mental Health Service; the inpatient unit is located at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Parkville. An Australian innovator in the provision of outreach mental health services in the wake of the deinstitutionalisation of the mentally ill, the clinic comprises several independent teams:
- Intake: Take all new referrals during business hours and triage them to the other teams or external services as appropriate.
- Continuing Care Team (CCT): The general outpatient team. Clients have a case manager and a doctor allocated, and attend for regular appointments. This is the largest team, with a total client caseload of around 450.
- Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team (CATT): Short term crisis work, taking referrals from the community, police, hospitals etc.
- Mobile Support and Treatment Team (MSTT): Intensive case management with a focus on rehabilitation.
- Homeless Outreach Psychiatric Services (HOPS): Work closely with homeless clients (including those staying at short term crisis accommodation) with severe mental illnesses who would not otherwise engage with services.
- Primary Mental Health Team (PMHT): Unlike the other teams, the PMHT deals with the less severe, but more common mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. Clients are only seen short term in conjunction with a primary health practitioner (e.g.- GP or counsellor from a non-specialist service).
