War Rock (Korean: 워록) is a free, fast-paced multiplayer first-person shooter. It has intentionally low system requirements in order to encourage widespread participation. War Rock features a growing number of maps, vehicles and over 25 different weapons. The player has the choice of playing on the NIU or Derbaran teams. The player has the choice of a number of classes, with each class having a different weapon set and ostensibly different combat roles and tactics. The game also features a ranking system and an in-game Item Shop where the player can 'rent' more powerful weapons using virtual currency (dinars) that is earned by playing the game. Rental periods range from three days up to a month. Some weapons can only be bought if the player uses real money to pay for an additional weapons slot. The player can also use real money to pay for other benefits in the game in the future as well. The basic version however is completely free to play, both the International and Korean versions.

Contents

[edit] Weapons

War Rock has a diverse selection of weapons for every class. They include:

[edit] 1st Weapon Slot (Backup)

  • Fists(Knuckle): Rarely used except for fun and/or possible enemy humiliation.
  • M7 bayonet/knife: A weapon that can only become available by removing all items from the players item slot, though this can only happen in the International version of War Rock. The M7 does no damage to enemy players and is usually used for fun. The knife has been discontinued as an available weapon, in the Korean version.

[edit] 2nd Weapon Slot (Secondary)

This slot contains the player's sidearm. Weapons are the same for all classes.

  • Colt M1911A1: It is the default secondary weapon, a semiautomatic handgun that does little damage. The maximum ammunition loadout is 6 magazines loading 8 rounds each (formerly 7 magazines with 12 rounds each prior to a recent patch).
  • Desert Eagle: A .50-caliber pistol that has a similar rate of fire to the Colt but is much more lethal. Must be rented, and comes with six 7-round magazines.
  • H&K MP5K: Light submachinegun, usable by all classes but must be rented. Loads 20 rounds and can be carried with up to 6 loaded magazines.
  • GLOCK 18: A hand gun that shoots weak shots, equal to the Colt. However, it also has a fully automatic mode. The GLOCK comes with six 17-round clips. The GLOCK is usually the gun for experts, for if used correctly, it can kill faster than any machine gun. On the other hand, an inexperienced player will miss some/most of the limited ammo and get killed while reloading.
  • S&W .357 Magnum: 6-shot revolver. The user can carry up to 6 reloads for it, not counting the ammunition it is initially loaded with upon spawning or respawning. The Magnum does a lot of damage, has a moderate accuracy level, but has high recoil.

[edit] 3rd Weapon Slot (Primary Weapons)

This slot contains the primary weapons of the player. Weapons vary on the class the player picked (such as Rockets for Heavy Weaponry, Assault Rifles for Combatants, etc)

  • H&K MP5: The default weapon for the Medic and Engineer classes, loading 30 rounds to a magazine with the player carrying 6(5 reserve) magazines into the field. While not as powerful as other weapons such as the Uzi or G36C, it is still effective due to its higher rate of fire. The MP5 is widely considered the strongest default weapon, and some have gone so far to say that it is a better choice than the Uzi, G36C, and P90.
  • Kalashnikov AK-47: A rentable weapon for the Combatant class, with a maximum load of 6(5 reserve) magazines of 30 rounds each. Can also be used in weapon slots 5, 6 and 7.
  • Daewoo K2: The Combatant's default weapon. Carries 30 bullets with 6 clips (5 reserve)
  • M24 SWS: The Scout's default weapon. Carries 6 clips(5 reserve), 5 shots per clip. Some users have complained about the reduction of accuracy from a mid range distance though.
  • M4A1 Carbine: A light weapon rentable by the Combatant class with 6(5 reserve) 30-round magazines. Can also be used in weapon slots 5, 6 and 7.
  • H&K G36C: Medics, Engineers and Combatants can rent and use the G36C, usable in weapon slots 5, 6 or 7 as well as 3, and loading 30 rounds into the 6(5 reserve) magazines or 100 rounds 2(1 reserve) magazines. Due to its increased capacity, the G36C has become a popular weapon.
  • H&K G36: A rentable assault rifle for the Combatant class. Like the G36C, it can also be used in the 5th, 6th or 7th weapon slots, and the player can carry up to 6(30/5) 30-round magazines at once. Comes equipped with a first-level zoom (2x) scope for increased accuracy.
  • FN P90: A light, compact submachinegun rentable by the Medic and Engineer; the player can carry up to 4(50/3) P90 magazines, each holding 50 rounds.
  • Uzi SMG: Like the P90, the Uzi can be rented by the Medic and Engineer, but only holds 32 rounds in 6(5 reserve) magazines.
  • H&K PSG1: A semiautomatic sniper rifle usable only by the Scout class. It is one of the only sniper rifles to be able to have one-shot to the heart for a instant kill, though its sniping capabilities are limited by the small amount of ammunition it can carry (four 5-round magazines).
  • Steyr SSG P-IIk: A rentable weapon for the Scout. Currently the more powerful sniper rifle in the international version.Holds 10/1 magazines and has 4(3 reserves)clips.
  • Panzerfaust 3: The default weapon for the Heavy Weapons Unit. Comes with 4(3 reserve) rockets.
  • Steyr AUG: A rentable short range scoped assault rifle that holds 30 rounds with 5 clips. Although technically an assault rifle, it has been more and more used as a submachine gun and many users have expressed dissatisfaction with this rifle because of the fact that it (like a sniper rifle) has no aiming retical without using the scope, yet is still expensive and has questionable shooting status.
  • RPG-7: A rentable rocket-propelled grenade launcher available to the Heavy Weapons Unit, and comes loaded with 5(4 reserve) RPG rounds. A shot directly to a player's torso or head is a one-shot-kill, hitting the area surrounding the opponent does about 50% splash damage.
  • FIM-92 Stinger: Similar to the RPG-7, but does minimal damage to infantry and tanks, it is designed for anti-air use only. It is capable of locking on aircraft. Comes with 5(4 reserve) surface-to-air missiles and can also be used in weapon slots 5, 6 and 7.

[edit] 4th Weapon Slot

This slot contains the supplementary items for the particular class.

  • K400 hand grenade: A standard fragmentation grenade designed to detonate in a few seconds once thrown. Effective against both infantry and vehicles; can also be used in weapon slots 5, 6, and 7.
  • TMA-1A land mine: The Heavy Weapons Unit's default accessory weapon, the TMA can be placed anywhere, but can only be detonated by a vehicle. The HWU can carry 3 of these land mines, but it is important to remember that any land mines that are currently "cooking" (waiting to be activated by enemy vehicle) will still count against a player's inventory, meaning that stopping at an ammunition station will not reload that land mine. The major advantages to the TMA-1A are its high destruction capability (destroying any land vehicle with 3 mines or less) and its "set and forget" capability (the user need not activate the mine, as it is automatically detonated when a vehicle comes withing range.)
  • Spanner: The default accessory for the Engineer, the spanner can be used to repair vehicles. It uses no ammo and has been considerably slower to repair since the last Warrock update. It repairs 13% on vehicles.
  • Medic Kit: The default accessory for the Medic, the 1-shot medical "pistol" gives her the ability to heal teammates (or herself). It carries 10 doses in reserve, and heals 20% health when used on herself, 30% when used on teammates.

[edit] 5th Weapon Slot

  • M60: A machinegun which can be rented by the Combatant, but can only be wielded with a single 100-round belt of ammunition, with another in reserve. Also able to be used in the 6th and 7th weapon slots. The M60 can be purchased with Dinar (in game money) but can't be used without also purchasing an extra slot for cash. Only available in the Korean version.
  • M134 Minigun: A minigun rentable by the Heavy Weapons Unit. Uses a single 200-round belt of ammunition. This is a cash only item. Only available in the Korean version.
  • Remington 870: Currently only available through the FFA tournaments held in the international version
  • M18 Smoke Grenade: A rentable accessory available to all classes, generating a thick cloud of yellow smoke after being armed and thrown. The player can only carry one of these, and can also use it in the 6th or 7th weapon slots. Only available in the Korean version.
  • Flashbang: A grenade used to cause disorientation and blind enemies. Cash item. Can only be obtained by entering the verification code in the International version.
  • Winchester Shotgun: A shotgun exclusively available to people during the time they played the FFA Tournament in the International version of Warrock.

[edit] Vehicles

[edit] Sea

  • Light SEAL Support Craft - This is a two man boat found in Pargona. It comes with a mounted M60 machine gun, with roughly the same overheat/cooldown rate of the Browning M2 but less powerful. The LSSC is also not as fast as you would expect it to be, and as a result many of its drivers or gunners have been sent to the bottom by passing Little Birds, another vehicle found on Pargona and very commonly used.
  • Mark V - This is the largest boat and one of the largest vehicles found in the game and comes with a mounted grenade launcher, and two .50 cal mounted guns. This boat is used mainly for transportation and for taking out enemy helicopters. Like the LSSC, it's relatively slow and unmaneuverable (even more so because of its size) compared to a truck or helicopter, but can withstand much more damage than its lighter cousin.

[edit] Air

  • A-10 Thunderbolt: Currently the dominating air power in the international version. It takes a high level of skill to fly this plane and to add to the difficulty of flying, the Thunderbolt is constantly targeted by Stingers, Oerlikons, and other A-10s. Bombs do extensive damage and are highly effective at taking out enemy players. Because of this, players are able to rack up enormous killing streaks, and thus the Thunderbolt considered one of the most valuable vehicles in the game. Consequentially, inexperienced pilots always try to fly the Thunderbolt and often get shot down or crash very quickly.
  • UH-60 Blackhawk: Comes in two versions, one equipped with 2 miniguns on the sides of the aircraft and the other with twin missile racks. Helicopters like the Blackhawk are too large and not maneuverable enough to consistently evade Stinger or antiaircraft fire and get shot down the most out of all the aircraft. They compensate for this by being heavily armoured, although are still vulnerable to anti air-gun fire. They are not as responsive to movement as the MH6 Little bird.
  • MH6 Little Bird: Armed with a machinegun and two rapid-fire missile pods (though the pods' ammunition can be depleted very quickly, since the Little Bird can only carry 3 silos of 10 missiles at a time (30 missiles in total). The Littlebird has less armour on the game than that of the slower UH-60 Blackhawk. It extremely effective against infantry and players can gain enormous amounts of kills, to the general dislike of players who cannot fly.
  • Dassault Rafale: The standard jet fighter in Conturas. It comes with 16 missiles and a machine gun. It is primarily used for air to air combat. It has more missile capacity than the F-15 but its missiles are a tad weaker. It is also faster than the F-15
  • F-15 Eagle: The more specialized jet fight in Conturas. It comes with 8 missiles and 15 bombs. It is primarily used as a bombing aircraft. Although it has less missile capacity than the Rafale, its missiles are stronger.

  • K1A1 Heavy Tank: The driver has access to a 120mm main gun and a .50-caliber machine gun mounted on the tank's turret. Two secondary positions control M60 and Browning M2 machine guns on either side of the turret, but leave the users exposed as well as limiting their fire arcs to a roughly 90-degree area to either side. The tank has high defense and requires multiple anti-tank rounds to be subdued. Found in Ohara, Havana, Engrene, Zakhar, and Cantumira.
  • Gepard: A German tank with a main turret carrying two antiaircraft guns, both with unlimited ammo but an overheat rate close to the M2's; it can only carry one driver/gunner who controls the tank and its turret. Unlike the static antiaircraft carriages, it can both move (albeit slowly, and turning even the slightest bit cuts its speed drastically) and angle its turret toward the ground, though the wide set of its guns can allow infantry to slip between its firing lanes as well as get close enough to be unreachable.
  • Wiesel 1 Light Tank: Currently found only in Emblem. These tanks are small and easier to destroy than the K1A1 heavy tank, but are extremely effective when used against infantry as their turret-mounted machine guns can tear a player to shreds in a few seconds and can survive multiple direct hits from anti-tank rounds such as the RPG-7. The only downside to this veichle is that its turret can only turn 180 degrees
  • Honda CR 125cc: A fast and maneuverable dirtbike type vehicle, it is the only vehicle with the ability to jump. Players can use it to speed between flags, but while using it the rider becomes vunerable to enemy fire while also being weaponless. Found in most medium and large maps.
  • HMMVW/Humvee: War Rock's all-purpose assault vehicle. The Humvee is useful for a number of things including swift killing, reconnaissance, and simple transportation. The normal armament, a .50-caliber machine gun, is very versatile with an unlimited ammunition supply and a faster fire rate than tanks, though this is limited by how the weapon does less damage than a tank cannon and overheats quickly and must cool down before the operator can resume firing. The gunner position leaves the operator nearly completely exposed, an easy target for sniper fire; even more so if the vehicle is stationary. It sports either a Browning M2 machine gun, a BGM-71 TOW missile launcher, or the M1097 Avenger air defense system. The Humvee is found in almost every medium and large map.
  • M35A2 2 1/2 ton truck: An unarmed transport vehicle. The M35 is quite fast and has the ability to carry up to 6 passengers including the driver.
  • Fixed M2 .50 Machine Gun: A stationary turret usually found on camp walls. The M2 has a fast rate of fire useful for providing suppression fire. When using the weapon, the operator is immobile and extremely vulnerable to everything from sniper fire to tank shells. Found in most medium and large maps.
  • AMX Leclerc: Currently found only in Cantumira, the tank features a remote-controlled .50 machine gun and a 120mm cannon.
  • K200(A1) Infantry Fighting Vehicle: Found only on the Havana map currently, it is capable of carrying up to 6 passengers including the driver and a gunner. The gunner is partially exposed and can be killed by regular infantry. Although heavily armored it is still slightly weaker than the tank.
  • LUCHS A2: found only in Cantimura and Zakhar. Armed with a .50 machine gun and a lighter machine gun. At current this is the only amphibious vehicle found in the game.

[edit] Modes

War Rock contains three main modes of play:

[edit] Close Quarter Combat

Close Quarter Combat (originally called Mission Mode) is a mode consisting of rounds of game play. In each round, a player is allowed to choose their class and is given one life. Depending on the player's team, certain objectives must be completed in order to win the round. Currently there is only one game mode, Explosive. In this game mode, one team (Debaran) is assigned with planting a bomb at one or more bomb sites while the other team (NIU) must eliminate the bomb planters and defuse any bombs if they are successfully planted. There are no ammo or health recovery stations, so medics are popular. This mode is very similar to Counter-Strike's de_ maps.

Close Quarter Combat also has a "Free for All" mode (currently only found in the Korean version, although it is generally agreed Free for All will be introduced at the same time as the February 2007 commercial release). In this mode every player is pitted against every other player, forcing each player to be aware of all other players in his or her vicinity. Winning in "Free for All" mode is obtained by being the first to achieve a predetermined number of kills. When killed, players re-spawn in 5 second intervals at random locations on the map. This type of play was only available at the international version for the FFA tournament

Close Quarter Combat maps allow for a minimum of 2 and maximum of 16 players.

[edit] Urban Ops

Urban Ops (originally called Infantry combat) maps are medium sized maps with ground assault vehicles, such as armored Humvees with machine guns, transport trucks, and motorcycles; however, some of the maps feature tanks (Either small, single passenger tanks or large, armoured tanks). Urban Ops often features buildings or obstacles that hamper the line of fire. Players can move around with vehicles or on foot with no difficulty.

Urban Ops games can be hosted with as little as 2 and as many as 24 players.

[edit] Free For All

A new game mode, Free For All maps can be either small or medium. The object in Free For All is to have the highest score obtained by the number of kills you get. In Free For All, unlike all of the other game modes there are no teams. It is everyone for themselves. There are little if any vehicles. The game ends when a pre determined score is reached by a person. This is not yet a public mode meaning you cannot make this type of game. Only game moderators are allowed. It can handle between 8 and 16 players The game mode had been used in the FFA tournament by the moderators starting 10/30/06. Players were granted shotguns in slot 5 while playing free for all mode in FFA tournament.

[edit] Maps

These are currently the maps available to be played upon in the International War Rock. There are currently 8 maps in total. Korean only maps are also listed with (KR) next to the map name. All maps available in the International War Rock are also available in Korea.

[edit] 'Close Quarter Combat' Maps

  • Marien

Marien is an urban map based in what looks like a broken down city. There aren't many places to hide so it is a good idea to stay as a group so you can watch each other's backs. There are two main sniping spots that sit on top of high ledges, one at each side of the base. Conflict mostly happens in the Marien building and it is a good idea not to just rush in there because grenades are usually constantly being thrown back and forth between the two teams. The bomb can be placed in either a destroyed building or a small little building that is about half destroyed. The map provides scarce cover for or from snipers. They are most commonly found on the second floor of the demolished building next to the Derbaran base or the high ledge with a few crates at the NIU base.

  • Cadoro

Cadoro in a desert-town like map with the NIU spawning in a small camp with a small wall which seems to have been hit with an explosive. That wall is a good spot to defend the base from. There is a central building which most of the firefights happen. More often at the front then back. Watch your back because lots of grenades get thrown inside. The bomb can either be placed in the central building or the NIU base.

  • Xauen

Xauen is an urban map that features two main ruins. The NIU spawn in a small camp with a ruin where the Debaran team can plant their bomb to their immediate left. The Debaran team spawns quite closely to the bombsite, making this map slightly in favor of the Debaran team. The NIU team however, has a ledge where they can see who is going into that bombsite quite clearly. The NIU team is at a disadvantage at the start because of how the map is set.

  • Khyber

Khyber is a palace-like map that seems to be the biggest Close-Quarters map. Having both bomb sites closer to NIU meaning a less chance of Deberan planting bombs. There are several major glitches in this map and exploitation of such can result in a player's account being banned.

[edit] 'Urban Ops' Maps

  • Ravello

Ravello is an urban map, featuring a church, many cramped alleyways, and underground tunnels which connect several parts of the map. Scouts often like to frequent the church and snipe from the belltower. Any team that has the church base secured has a probable chance of winning, though many matches have turned into a back-and-forth assault on the flag there.

  • Montana

Montana is another urban map similar to Ravello. It is a very small map optimized for small urban conflict. The map has only one point of contention: a power substation located in the center of the map. The map also features multiple buildings and rooftops overlooking the center area providing viewpoints for snipers and suppression gunners. Montana has been taken out of the game currently, with no indication of when it will return. It is assumed in WarRock forum discussions that the developers may be fixing issues regarding spawn camping, or regarding the difficulty of regaining the central flag after losing it. These thoughts are, as yet, unconfirmed.

  • Harbor IDA

An urban map similar to Ravello and Montana. This map is set in the evening and can be pretty tough to get oriented in. It has two buildings connected by a covered passage three stories up. This passage is usually occupied with both teams trying to kill each other with grenades, trying to access the opposite base. The central building offer many areas for sniping, while the ground has an assortment of cargo containers to provide cover. Heavy weapons units are mostly unnecessary on Harbor because there are no vehicles on the map. The most effective units are medics, combatants and scouts.

  • Emblem

Emblem is a mix of buildings and empty space, with the Wiesel 1, several Humvees, and four motorbikes are found around the map. A single large hangar building is located in the middle of the map, with two smaller building on either side connected by a catwalk in the second story. Snipers frequent the hilltops near the bases and the rooftop of the central neutral base, picking off operators of the fixed 50 Cal mounts in either team's base structure as well as anything else that comes in range.

  • Ravello 2nd Street

Ravello 2nd Street was created to combat the spawn killing that was happening in Ravello in the NIU home base. The only difference between Ravello and Ravello 2nd Street is that the NIU base is not as cramped as it was before and base two is completely different. Also, Dream execution used different textures for Ravello and Ravello 2nd Street.

[edit] 'Battle Group'Maps

A War Rock screenshot of two armoured vehicles in Cantumira.

  • Ohara

Ohara is a large desert. There are 3 neutral bases each near the middle, but more toward the yellow team's base. Like its pregame statement, tank warfare is encouraged. Despite its desert-like and open landscape, there are some very good spots for Scouts to occupy and can snipe from with almost little or no risk to themselves. It can get extremely hectic in this map and is where most of the in-game disconnections and "bad network condition" notices will pop up.

  • Havana

Havana is the larger version of Montana, Ravello, and Harbor IDA. Like Ohara it can get very hectic on servers with a large number of players. K1A1 Tanks and Humvees are available in this map and should be used during the game. This map is best suited for Engineers, Medics, and Combatants although Scouts can get by in this map by occupying the various buildings.

  • Engrene

It features two small airports for both teams, each featuring a pair of A-10 Warthogs. There are a great number of tanks, Gepards, Humvees, trucks, and helicopters, as well as fixed antiaircraft guns at the airports and around the perimeter bases of the map. Engrene, because of its size, usually does not have much intensity in all of the map, as compared to the other smaller maps. However, the advanced vehicles in the map make up for this. It is also notorious for bad visual lag towards the middle of the map, especially when jets are dogfighting overhead.

  • Conturas

Conturas is the largest map in Warrock. This map contains about 15 fighter aircraft per side, a couple of Humvee Avengers, some helicopters, and a handful of AA guns. This map is strictly focused for air to air combat and has constant amount of dogfights within this map. It takes horrendously slow to get around this map because of the large distances between the bases, and the lack of vehicles provided. Surprisingly this map is also very sniper friendly because of the mountains and their ease of traversing. This map is especially notorious for its lag in the middle of the map when all the aircraft are dogfighting and frequent in game disconnections occur.

  • Cantumira

Cantumira is a rectangular kind of map. It features some water, a main street, lots of hidden spots in the street, and some desert beyond the main wall opposite the coastline. On the vehicle roster are UH60 Blackhawks, the Lynx amphibious vehicle, the K1A1 and the Leclerc tank, with two Little Birds at either Base Camp. The main focus of the map is the main street which stretches from one team's Base Camp to the other's. Main Street splits off into two side alleys, one going down beneath a small platform with a crashed Blackhawk, and the other continuously moving on.

A popular strategy for both teams is to steal the other team's helicopter and use both to assault the enemy. Engineers are very useful in this map because of their repair skills, HWUs are also useful because they carry landmines and rocket launchers. Another useful character in this map is scouts because of numerous sniper positions available. Medics and Combatants also have a role in the center of the map, where various flags surrounded by urban warfare conditions can be captured.
