Wanderers Stadium

Wanderers Stadium is a stadium situated just south of Sandton in Illovo, Johannesburg in Gauteng Province, South Africa. Test, One Day and First class cricket matches are played here. It is also the home ground for the Highveld Lions, formerly known as Gauteng (Transvaal).

The stadium has a seating capacity of 30,000, and was built in 1956 to replace the Old Wanderers Stadium. It was completely overhauled following South Africa's readmission to international cricket in 1991. In 1996, five new 65 metre high floodlight masts replaced the existing four 30 metre high masts enabling day-night limited-overs cricket.

The Cricket World Cup 2003 final was held at the Wanderers Stadium. On 1 October 2004, the Wanderers Clubhouse was virtually destroyed by fire.

On 12 March 2006 a ODI game South Africa played Australia in what is dubbed the greatest match of all time. Australia scored a world record 434 for 3 in the final ODI match of the series only for it to be toppled by an inspired South African's who reached 438 for 9 with one ball to spare.

During the night both teams manged to topple various records: 1.Austalia became the first team to score over 400 runs in a match 2. 434 was the highest score batting first, 438 is the highest score batting second 3. 872 is the highest match aggregate score, 256 runs scored in boundries by Australia (43 fours, 14 sixes) which is tied best, SA scored 248 in Boundries (44, 12) is the fourth best 4. 504 is the most runs scored in boundries in a match (87 fours,26 sixes) 5. 126 is the most boundries scored in an innings by a batsmen, Herschelle Gibbs(RSA (21 fours, 7 sixes)(175 off 111 balls) 6.0-113 is the most expensive fiqures by a bowler Mick Lewis(AUS) 7.99 balls it took Ricky Ponting (164 off 105 balls) to get to 150- the fastest ever, Gibbs took a hundred balls to score 150. 8. it was only the third time that an ODI series has been decided with 1 wicket standing in the last over of the series. 9. it was also the highest succesful run chase.
