Waltrop is a town and a municipality in the district of Recklinghausen, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated on the Datteln-Hamm Canal, approx. 15 km east of Recklinghausen and 15 km north-west of Dortmund. Its population is 30,020 (2005).
The mayor is Anne Heck-Guthe (SPD). The town Waltrop is surrounded by the Bauernschaften (rural boroughs) Lippe (Unterlippe/Oberlippe), Elmenhorst, Brockenscheidt, Leveringhausen, Oberwiese and Holthausen. Waltrop is twinned with Herne Bay, Kent, UK. Official website: www.waltrop.de.
