Walter Winans

Walter Winans (April 5, 1852 - August 12, 1920) was an American-born British marksman, sculptor, and painter who participated in the 1908 and 1912 Summer Olympics. He won two medals for shooting: a gold in 1908 and a silver in 1912. He also won a gold medal for his sculpture An American Trotter at Stockholm in 1912.

As an expatriate, Winans lived in Kent, England. He was interested in horses and wild boar hunting. His favorite firearm was the Webley-Fosbery Automatic Revolver.

Only quite recently there was a report of a mad dog in a crowded street of New York. The policeman on the beat killed it at the first shot, and did not hit anyone in the crowd. If a London policeman started "loosing off" a revolver in a crowd, I fear the ambulance corps would be kept busy!
