Walter Rutherford Peterson, Jr. (born September 19, 1922) is an American realtor, educator, and Republican politician from Peterborough, New Hampshire. Born in 1922 in Nashua, New Hampshire, after serving in the New Hampshire state House of Representatives., he won two terms as Governor.

After Peterson's term as governor, he became President of Franklin Pierce College in 1975, and served until his retirement in 1995. Since 1996 he has been a trustee of the University System of New Hampshire.
