Walter Fritzsch

Walter Fritzsch (* 21 November 1920 in Planitz; † 15 October 1997 in Dresden) was a German soccer trainer.

He began his active career as a soccer player in 1927 with the SC Planitz. In 1940 he was changed to VfL Leisnig and played there until 1943. Additonal teams after 1943 were the BC Hartha, the SC Döbeln and Zwickau-Oberhohndorf. His last club was Wismut Cainsdorf, were he played until 1950. He has won 5 GDR Championships (1971, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978) and in two times won the FDGB Cup (1971, 1977).
He finished his cereer as a soccer player because of a back-injury. He began to work as a trainer with Wismut Aue in 1950. Fritzsch was a trainer of Empor Lauter, Motor Dessau, SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt, SC Empor Rostock (three deputy-master-titles) and Stahl Riesa between 1952 to 1969.
[edit] Dynamo Dresden
He became the trainer for Dynamo Dresden on 30 June 1969 and they began the most succesfull period in the club's history. In his nine years with the club, the black-yellow secured five GDR-master-titles of the DDR-Oberliga, four deputy-master-titles, two FDGB Cup wins and played 42 times in the European Cup. Further successes of the small, strict trainer were the care of all in all 40 national team players. He helped discovered talents like Ulf Kirsten and Matthias Sammer.
[edit] German Football Association of the GDR
After the change through Gerhard Prautzsch as trainer, Walter Fritzsch worked for the German Football Association of the GDR. However, his opinion was still in demand with Dynamo Dresden since the team had arrived in the Bundesliga. As a trainer he participated in 1900 games, with 1163 victories. He has won five Masterships of the GDR (1971, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978) and in two times the FDGB Cup (1971, 1977).

On October 15, 1997, shortly before his 77th birthday, he died. The "small General" was buried on the cementery ("Heidefriedhof Dresden") took place within the circle of narrow friends, former companions and players of the “Heidefriedhof Dresden”. His old friends, opponents and collegues said good bye to your "little general" at the "Heidefriedhof Dresden" Cementary. Following, it was based a monument in the "Rudolf Harbig Stadion". Because he was a very special trainer-personalty, therefore it will be organized a football-tournament in Dresden, every year.
