Walter Brueggemann

Walter Brueggemann (b. 1933) is an Old Testament scholar and author who lives in Georgia in the United States. Born in Nebraska, the son of a German Evangelical pastor, Brueggemann received his Bachelor's Degree from Elmhurst College and doctorates from Eden Theological Seminary (in 1961), Union Theological Seminary, New York, and Saint Louis University (in 1974). He was professor of Old Testament at Eden, and then became professor of Old Testament in 1986 at Columbia Theological Seminary, from where he retired in the early 2000s.

Brueggemann is an advocate and practitioner of rhetorical criticism. He has authored more than 58 books, hundreds of articles, and several commentaries on books of the Bible. Brueggemann participated in Bill Moyers' 1990s PBS television series on Genesis (documented in Genesis: A Living Conversation. Main Street Books, 1997. ISBN 0-385-49043-7). He is a United Church of Christ minister.
