[edit] Scoring

The scoring system used in rugby has changed many times over the years. Because rugby evolved from football, the original emphasis was on scoring goals rather than tries. As a consequence, the original scoring scheme had dropped-goals (3 points) worth three times a try (1 point). Most of the changes have been to increase the value of tries compared to goals (conversions, penalties, dropped-goals, and goals from mark). This table only contains scoring schemes from the periods during which Australia was playing test matches.

Date Try Conversion Penalty Dropped-goal Goal from mark
1899-1904 3 points 2 points 3 points 4 points 4 points
1905-1947 3 points 2 points 3 points 4 points 3 points
1948-1970 3 points 2 points 3 points 3 points 3 points
1971-1977 4 points 2 points 3 points 3 points 3 points
1977-1991 4 points 2 points 3 points 3 points -
1992-present 5 points 2 points 3 points 3 points -
