Waiariki Institute of Technology

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Established in 1978, Waiariki Institute of Technology is one of the largest tertiary institutes in New Zealand. Originally developed as a centre for adult and trades education, the institute began to offer bachelor degree programmes in the early 1990's. The main Rotorua campus is low-rise and set in clean, green and safe rural surroundings only 5 minutes from the city centre. Regional campuses exist in Taupo, Tokoroa and Whakatane.

The largest courses (by student volume) are nursing, forestry, business, computing, tourism and hospitality. In addition to in house degrees Waiariki has also worked collaboratively with the University of Waikato, University of Auckland and Unitec on a range of courses.

Waiariki is somewhat unique in having an on-site marae named Tangatarua, which translates as two peoples and reflects the bicultural nature of the staff and student population. Approximately 10% of students are from overseas.

A recent innovation has been the establishment of a business incubator, focusing upon tourism ventures in the Bay of Plenty region.
