The Wade Defense or Rat Defense is a highly transpositional opening in chess. It is characterized by the immediate 1.d4 d6. It is the 5th most common move in response to d4. The opening can transpose into several openings after 2.e4 including the Philidor Defense after 2.e4 e5 3.Nf3 (3.dxe5 dex5 4.Qxd8+, with a small advantage, is also possible), the Pirc Defense after 2.e4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 (3...c6 is the Czech Defense), and the Robatsch Defense after 2.e4 g6. Other transposition possibilities include the Old Indian Defense after 2.c4 Nf6 3.Nc3 e5 (or 3...Nbd7 followed by ...e5) followed by ...Be7, the Janowski Indian Defense after 2.c4 Nf6 3.Nc3 Bf5, and the King's Indian Defense after 2.c4 g6 3.Nf3 Nf6. Despite this, there are unique lines such as 1.d4 d6 2.Nf3 Bg4.
