Waddesdon Manor railway station
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Waddesdon Manor railway station was a station serving the village of Waddesdon and its manor, to the north of Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, England. The station is not to be consfused with Waddesdon Road Station at the other end of the Waddesdon Manor estate on the Brill Tramway.
The station was first served in 1897 and closed in 1936.
It was the first station north of Aylesbury on the section of the Metropolitan Railway between Aylesbury and Verney Junction that was abandoned when the Metropolitan Railway became the Metropolitan Line in 1936 when it was subsumed into London Transport. London Underground continued to run services as far as Aylesbury until 1961 after which point the terminus became Amersham.
Whilst open, this station also served the former Great Central Main Line (which ran on the same tracks as the Metropolitan Line as far as Quainton Road that was not itself closed down until the 1960's, under the Beeching Axe, though this station closed in 1936.
Today the permanent way is still extant at the former site this station (although it has been singled). One platform of the station (on the side which the now singled track is not adjacent to) remains. The other has been lifted.
The line is still used for the occasional freight train as well as ad hoc services to Aylesbury provided by the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre based up the line at Quainton Road.
Because of its association with the Metropolitan Line this station is considered to be one of the Closed London Underground stations although it is a over 30 miles from London and is not underground.
