Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 140, is a noted cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. It is scored for french horn, 2 oboes, oboe da caccia, violins, viola, basso continuo, and choir with soprano, tenor, and bass soloists.
It is based on the chorale of the same name by Philipp Nicolai. This Lutheran hymn remains popular both in its original German and in a variety of English translations. The text on which it is based comes from the Gospel of Matthew. Because of this, the cantata was rarely performed because the reading is scheduled for the 27th Sunday after Trinity, a Sunday that only occurs in the church year when Easter is very early. In the modern Revised Common Lectionary, however, the reading is scheduled for the first Sunday in Advent, and the hymn, or the cantata, are commonly performed in churches on that Sunday.
