Wabash National NYSE: WNC is one of the largest manufacturers of semi-truck trailers in the world. Founded only in 1985, the company experienced explosive growth during the 1990s, and now manufactures more than 50 thousand units per year, with over one billion dollars in sales.
Wabash National is headquartered in Lafayette, Indiana, where its main production facilities are also located. An additional plant in Harrison, Arkansas produces the oak flooring for trailers. The company also owns network of dealerships, or trailer centers as they are known, throughout North America.
The company's growth was due in part to revolutionary construction methods which produced high-quality dry van trailers. In addition, the company also manufactures flat bed and refrigerated trailers. Wabash previously manufactured intermodal containers, but has since discontinued production. While the company is no doubt named for the nearby Wabash River, the word Wabash is synonymous with transportation innovation in the minds of many Americans because of the Wabash Cannonball.
