WABS

WABS is a radio station broadcasting on 780 kHz in the mediumwave AM band. Its studios and transmitters are located in Arlington, Virginia, and it serves the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. WABS has a daytime transmitter power of 5,000 Watts, but is licensed for daytime operation only, since it shares its frequency with clear channel WBBM in Chicago.
WABS is owned by Salem Communications and broadcasts a mixture of Christian radio and conservative talk programs. Some of the programs include Thru the Bible and Focus on the Family.

WABS was originally WAVA, in Arlington, Virginia. On this station, in the 1940s, the phrase "country music" was first used to describe the style of playing.
In the 1960s, WAVA was one of the first all-news stations.
WABS was sold in the 1980s and began Christian sermon and music programming. Its callsign stands for "American Bible Society." It was bought by Salem Communications in the early 2000s and shares programming with WAVA.
