W.I.T.C.H. is a French animated television series based on the Italian comic book series of the same name. Like the comics, the series follows five ordinary girls: Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia and Hay Lin, with magical powers who become the Guardians of the Veil.

They must save Meridian from the evil sorcerer Phobos and Cedric who are searching for Phobos' sister, the long lost princess of Meridian. It is later revealed the princess is Cornelia's best friend Elyon, and the Guardians then set about saving her from Phobos.

The Guardians chief ally is Hay Lin's grandmother Yan Lin, a former Guardian herself, and the one that taught the girls about their magical destiny. They are also helped by Caleb, a heroic soldier from Meridian who leads the rebellion against Phobos, and Blunk, a frog-like goblin creature who takes things from the human world to Meridian (and vice-versa), humourously mistaking everyday objects for other things or items of value.

The first season consisted of 26 episodes, and the second season is currently screening. It was reported that Sip Animation will complete full production of W.I.T.C.H. Season 2 around September of 2006, but that it will premiere in the States, Canada, and The UK in spring of 2006.

W.I.T.C.H. airs on Jetix (on Toon Disney) in the US and has been screened in several other countries.

[edit] The Guardians' Powers

Each Guardian's powers are fuelled from Candracar to the Heart via the Aurameres (the physical representations of the Guardians' powers). The Aurameres hold the same powers per Guardian, i.e. if Cassidy had the ability to manipulate minds, Irma has it too. The Guardians' powers progress over time.

When the the Guardians transform, they change form and grow wings, which help them fly.

Using the Heart of Candracar, a guardian can create an Astral Drop, a duplicate of herself, when the words "Spord Lartsa" (Astral Drops spelt backwards) are said.

Sans the veil, the Guardians can cross worlds by folding, with the help of the Heart of Candracar.

In order to travel to another place in the same world, each guardian can teletransport. Teletransporting is a difficult ability and one can materialize into another solid object if not careful.

  • Guardian Over Quintessence (Will & Nerissa)

Usually the Keeper of the Heart of Candracar, she possesses the Power of Quintessence, a lightning-like power which can either damage, kill or bring something to life. Initially Will did not possess Quintessence, because energy from the Aurameres was used to create "The Veil Between Worlds". However, Will had superhuman strength and the power to emit bright light from the Heart of Candracar. When the veil was lowered she gained the ability of Quintessence. Nerissa too possessed this power. Both use it to bring objects to life. Will also talks to appliances through Quintessence. They can also create folds in space and traverse worlds.

Nerissa can glamour, enabling her to change the appearances anything around her, without altering the actual molecular structure of the object of Glamour, yet only casting an illusion and changing the voice. It is unknown if Will will gain this ability.

  • Guardian of Water (Irma & Cassidy)

The Water Guardian is Hydrokinetic. Both Irma and Cassidy can manipulate water as well as condense moisture in the atmosphere. Using this technique, Water Guardians are able to make it rain at will. Water Guardians can also have limited mind control over others.

  • Guardian of Fire (Taranee & Halinor)

The Fire Guardian is Pyrokinetic and Thermokinetic. Both Taranee and Halinor can produce and manipulate fire. They can also absorb and release heat waves. Fire Guardians are also telepathic within their own group.

  • Guardian of Earth (Cornelia & Kadma)

The Earth Guardian is Geokinetic and Chlorokinetic. They can manipulate the Earth, causing Earthquakes and control the growth of plants. Before falling under Nerissa's spell Kadma taught Cornelia a skill called "Green Talking", where an Earth Guardian can communicate with vegetation. Both Kadma and Cornelia have the ability of Telekinesis, allowing her to move objects with the power of her mind.

  • Guardian of Air (Hay Lin & Yan Lin)

The Air Guardian has the ability to manipulate air currents and, since sound waves travel through air, the Air Guardian can also hear sounds from a great distance. The Air Guardian also has the power of Empathic Precognition which is higher than the other Guardians. Hay Lin used to get dreams prior to Elyon's coronation, in which she was Elyon and was sitting on a throne, the same which Phobos later used to drain Elyon's powers. The Air Guardian also has the power of Invisibility.

Yan Lin showed signs of Photokinesis, whereas she created a beam of light in the episode M is fo Mercy and a few luminous objects in J is for Jewel while illustrating Teletransportation.

[edit] Trivia

  • UK and USA have different theme songs. The one is UK introduces the girls powers in a story version, while the USA just shows cool action clips of some of the episodes.
  • For season 2, SIP Animation brought a new studio to animate the series.
  • In the US, Season 2 didn't get a new opening because Disney US wanted consistency when they aired Season 1 & 2 simultaneously. This doesn't apply to the UK Season 2 opening, which did get revamped with new scenes.
  • The US opening includes scenes from the W.I.T.C.H. demo reel, but were never used in the series.
  • There are three Spanish versions of the W.I.T.C.H. opening: (1) A version heard in Spain, (2) A version heard in Latin America, and (3) A Spanish version of the US opening which can be heard in the US if you switch the audio from English to Spanish (You'll hear the Spanish dub if you do so)[citation needed]
  • From episode 14 onwards, a different singer sings the US W.I.T.C.H. theme song.
  • Will and Nerissa's power "Quintessence" was actually considered to be the fifth element by ancient and medieval philosophers. The heavenly bodies were supposed to be made of it.
  • Surprisingly, all four voice actors of the popular show The Weekenders have a connection to W.I.T.C.H. The protagonist Tino was voiced by Jason Marsden, who voices Matt Olsen. Lor was voiced by Grey DeLisle who voices Miranda, Tish was voiced by Kath Soucie who voices Nerissa, and Carver was voiced by Phil Lamarr who auditioned to voice Peter Cook but lost to Ogie Banks.
