W.A.Silva (16th.January 1890- 3rd.May 1957) was a best selling author in the early period of Sinhala literature. Wellawattearachchige Abraham Silva was born in Wellawatte, Colombo. Armed with a formal Sinhala education up to 5th standard and English up to 8th., he wrote his first novel "Siriyalatha" at the age of 17.
After studying Sanskrit and Sinhala under Pelane Sri Vajiragnana Thero and reading world literature in his spare time while working as a clerk, he wrote his second novel in 1922 (Lakshmi). Later, he wrote several novels and short story collections, which became popular. Several of his novels include Kalae Handa (the first Sinhala novel to be made a movie) and Hingana Kolla, which was later made into movies as well.
He also edited Siri Sara (1919-1923) and Nuwana (1940-1946) magazines as well as the weekly newspaper Lanka Samaya (1933). After his death, the High street in Wellawatte was named W.A.Silva Mawatha in his honour.
