VTAM
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
VTAM is an acronym for Virtual Telecommunications Access Method. VTAM is IBM's software package that provides communications via telecommunication devices and their users for mainframe environments. It is the implementation of Systems Network Architecture (SNA) for mainframes. In other words, VTAM is an API that controls communications in SNA networks. VTAM supports several network protocols, including SDLC and Token Ring.
While support for a critical piece of network hardware, the IBM 3745/3746, is being withdrawn, VTAM and SNA are still supported and in use by many companies.
The VTAM subsystem is controlled via a commands issued through the system console or through special control cards in the JES.
VTAM has been renamed to be the SNA Services feature of Communications Server for OS/390. Communications Server for OS/390 now also provides TCP/IP functions as part of the same software package.
